what coolant do you use?
« on: August 20, 2010, 08:03:27 PM »
Book says Sigma coolant 30 percent, anti rust and anti freeze - holds 1.28 quarts radiator and tank.  Thinking of doing this soon - any advise?

Don't use pond water, or battery acid. Trust me on this!

Buy any.

p.s. All coolants are anti rust and anti freeze. :)

Don't know about the 250 but my Xciting manual calls for antifreeze without silicates to keep from hurting aluminum components.

YOu have to read fine print on the jugs to see if a particular one has silicates or not.  I wound up getting a Prestone type 50/50% which can be used straight out of the jug without mixing with water.

If you get one that is full strength and has to be mixed with water, use distilled water for the mix.

There are MANY references on the net to NOT using anything with silicates in motorcycles. Seems they break down the seals on the water pump.

That being said, I had a loose rad cap while riding and had to use some Peak 50-50 to get going. Supposedly, once you use the silicates you are stuck with them, so I just use Peak 50-50 with an additive which does seem to keep it cooler.

Not that sure that the anti-silicate thing applies to most scoots.

Just my 2 cents here. Do not use tap water distiled only! If you have hard water(lot of minarels) they do not play well with the metels in your bikes. I have seen this actually eat a water pump and cast metel surrounding it.
Kymco peoples too many ;) I'm not an expert just a full time hobbiest.

This is what my guide says:

Cautions for Using Coolant:
• Use coolant of specified mixing rate. (The
mixing rate of 425cc KYMCO SIGMA
coolant concentrate + 975cc distilled
water is 30%.)
• Do not mix coolant concentrate of
different brands.
• Do not drink the coolant which is
poisonous.
• The freezing point of coolant mixture shall
be 5􀄊lower than the freezing point of the
riding area.

I would just make sure whatever you use is safe for aluminum.

It appears that it is required to remove the front cover to access the radiator cap - it appears to me this is another Chinese water torture.  The service manual that I downloaded when I first got the scooter appears to be for the old style p250 not the newer body style.  It says People S 250, but the illustrations and directions are for another body style.  Is there another manual that has the newer style??  Not sure how much help that would be if it is written in the same style as the one I have - the translation/thought process is foreign to me.

I think you should add the fluid the the over flow...

Unless you are replacing all of the fluid.

If you are using the Service Guide Chapter 2, the instructions for the PS250 start on page 2-12  and continue to 2-16.

Here is a link to the service guides, the owners manual, the wiring diagrams and parts guide for the P and PS.  You need to look in the entire book for both the PS and P sections they kind of mixed them all up.

Is it worse to drink different brands?

Itry to mix my brands...it gives me an upset stomach...

Just kidding.

Stick with a coolant of the same color.  That's about all I worry about.  They all are about the same in my book. Green with green, blue with blue, orange with orange.  In my mind, most of the coolant's are so similar in their composition that it makes so little difference to a scooter. You are not likely to be testing it's limits.  Are you really going to be riding near the freezing point of radiators fluid? Are you storing the bike in sub freezing temps for long periods of time... or are you storing the bike in a heat space... or does it even get that cold where you live?

If the color is not dark enough, it's not mixed right... just like a weak bourbon and water is bad tasting (unless you prefer a light drink)... a weak green colored coolant will freeze before a darker green colored mixture.

If you see brown colors.... it's time to flush it out and start over.

I was a bartender... bourbon and water  or seven or ice or neat or press or sour or manhattan or soda (water) or coke

whatever you want is fine with me.

I guess I should explain... when I make a drink with any brown liquor and clear mix, the darker the drink... the stronger the drink.  the lighter coleored the drink the weaker the drink is.

When i poured a good (strong) drink, it was "well" colored.

fyi... the more ice in the cup , the stronger the drink; the less ice in a cup, the weaker the drink, you are buying ONE shot of liquor. If you added a little ice and one shot, it will take a lot of mixer to fill the cup to make a weak drink.  If you started with LOTS of ice, added your one shot, you only a small amount of room for mixer and now have a strong drink. Either way... you still only getting one shot.

So the strength would depend on wether the ice melted or not.
