Front brake doesn't illuminate the brake light
« on: October 23, 2018, 03:32:13 PM »
Hi all,

I have a 2011 DT300 that I bought and have discovered that the brake light doesn't light up when I pull the front brake: back brake lights it up the way you would expect. So this is my first scooter and never owned a motorcycle but logic tells me the front brake should light up the brake light the same way the back brake does.

In changing the back tire and looking around under the seat I noticed a plug that wasn't plugged into anything.  I took a picture of it and attached it.

The previous owner also had issues with the seat locking mechanism and has disabled it and replaced it with a yellow line to open the seat. I'm not sure if by disconnecting the electrical seat locking mechanism initiated from the key position has also disabled the front brake lighting up the brake light.

Any direction you might have would be fantastic.
thx

Does the scooter start OK when you pull only the front brake lever ? (Most scoots start if you pull either brake lever in the start procedure )
If pulling the front brake lever neither starts or lights the brake light....it is likely a failed switch up there on the lever. Little black plastic switch. ...usually cheap and easy to swap out.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

Good on you, mate. I had both my DT300 brake switches go bad. The permanent fix is to replace the brake bulb with an LED, which draws way less current then the incandescent bulb thereby not burning up your switches.

Those switches come in left and right according to de dee so check the one you ordered! That unused/open connector in your picture is where the Kymco analyzer your dealer is SUPPOSED to have plugs in. Should have a rubbery cap to keep it clean and a rubbery band to hang it in that rear area. The seat lock is purely mechanical activated by the ignition key. What happens on that model is the cable is single from the ignition switch area and couples in to a device that has two cables out that activate the two latches. That device gets real dirty and jams. You can get to it by removing a bunch of body panels to clean it out and lube the whole deal.

@stuo - Thanks very much for the suggestion on the LED brake light, I'll research it and add it.

@CROSSBOLT - thx as well, glad to know what that plug is for...I'm not really one to take anything to a dealership unless it's a recall.
I bought a left and a right of Amazon for $8.

This is my first scooter and it might be my gateway drug to a motorcycle but I figured for $800usd (2700miles on the 2011 DT300) it has been fun to ride and learn something new.

BTW - love this forum

Be sure to get the "extra bright" LED brake bulb, pricier but the difference is worth it.

You got a steal of a deal on your DT.

Safe riding...

@ Stuo

Do you know if the extra bright bulb can only be purchased online or is it a variant of a standard bulb that I could get from a regular Autoparts store?

thx

Never mind about the brake light...I found the right one on another thread in the forum.
