intermittent starting issues 2003 People 50
« on: August 24, 2010, 04:47:52 AM »
Last fall I bought a used 2003 people 50. pretty low miles, in really great shape. used it quite a bit until the MN weather got too cold in nov or dec. I winterized it, and got a new battery this spring.
my trouble is for much of this year it's been intermittently not starting. I got the carb cleaned and spark plug changed. It started like a dream for a week or so. The weather here in MN has been pretty rainy/stormy, so I haven't had as much of a change to try to ride it as I'd like. When I try to start her up, it wants to- I've got electrical, it turns, but wont start. Sometimes it "almost" starts, but then doesn't. I had been thinking that it was a morning thing, or a wet thing, because sometimes it seemed like it started better later, but I'm not so sure about that theory now. I've tried kick starting, manual choking, putting it on it's side for a while (did all that the other day and it started right up the next day)

Has anyone had any similar issues? got any ideas about what's wrong?

The shop I took it to said since they just did the work, to go ahead and bring it back. Problem is I'm having trouble getting it to start so I can bring it there!

Hey mnk # 2 things to check weak or now spark. So the coil or the stator(generator). My 2003 stator just went out also and was having the same issues. Not a cheap fix so i would test the other stuff first.
The things to check killswitch, ignition, loose or broken wires, physicly look for spark at plug, change plug again(they are bad out of the box sometimes) look for cracks in coil wire etc.
But no spark it's not going to go anywhere, hope this helps good luck.

..Welcome to th' forum MNKristin!!..

..it's possible that there is some trash in your tank, that has transferred itself to your carb...

..there is a really small port that the fuel must be sucked up through into the airstream..

..you say you tried "manually choking"..how did you do that??

..does your scoot have the stock airbox??

..if th' shop cleaned ur carb, and changed the plug, and it was good for a while, i'd bet that you have a fuel delivery problem...

..every mod (action) necessitates a (reaction) mod..
