I have to rimind myself Scooterfan that you are in South Africa! Your last post had me going!

Yes, I find myself at the other side of the pond but I’m not a complete “stranger”. My son is a US citizen, and three of my grandchildren are US citizens as well. They find themselves in Bondurant IA. So far I managed to to tour 14 states in the US. My wife did 3 more states - 17 in total.

And yes, forums are very helpful !

I stumbled across this Chinese CDI and decided to take a chance and order it as a spare from China.  Apart from  a name at the back, it looks similar to the one I got from the local Chinese scooter dealer.

So I'm crossing fingers and hope it works - it's on it's way from China. At $3.19 plus a few  $$ for shipment cost I think I should survive it it doesn't  work.

As long as it doesn't fry anything on the loom you should be good. I've been having similar CDI issues recently for a Honda, believe it or not... ended up buying the CDI off a different model from the same era and just praying that it's the same. It'll arrive this week sometime, I hope.

I already covered about 850 km since installation and it still works perfectly. Everything still works like usual, so I guess the loom is still fine.

The CDI I ordered from China already arrived in S A.  The shipment company already contacted me and I just had to pay a small amount of VAT.  It should be delivered any day from now and I can't wait to plug it in to see if it works.

So I got the parts from China today but what a waste.

The CDI is a lot smaller than the original and it immediately blew a fuse when I hit the starter button.
The aluminium drain plug is paper thin and according to measurement details elsewhere it might not even fit.
The rectifier looks like it will fit but I still need to check if it works.

Most of these components will probably end up in a rubbish bin.

That's very disappointing :(

Do you want me to see how much it'd cost to ship one from the UK? I can get hold of one for relatively little.

Thanks, I appreciate your offer but for the time being I managed to find a cheap aftermarket one from a local dealer who sells Chinese scooters. So far I already covered more than 1000 km since installation and it still works perfectly.

I actually just ordered the (wrong) one from China as a spare because the price was so low. For the time being I just need to contact the local dealer to find out whether he could supply another cheap aftermarket one as a spare unit. If he can't supply another one I will appreciate if you could let me know about the price. The OEM ones are quite expensive at the Kymco dealers.

Thanks again.

Thanks, I really appreciate. I sent the local supplier a message but they haven't responded yet. Will let you know as soon as possible.

I managed to get another aftermarket CDI from the local dealer today. I already plugged in in and it works perfectly
When I told them about the incorrect CDI I ordered from China, they offered a straight swap for the 2nd hand CDI they already gave me - so at the end the incorrect one I ordered from China was not a complete loss.
So I'm quite happy to have an extra CDI handy.

Again, thanks for your offer to help.

Just some feedback regarding the 2nd hand Chinese CDI which I got from a local dealer.

As mentioned some time ago - the original Kymco CDI on my scooter only lasted 9200 km.  At this stage  the scooter has done another 9300 km with the 2nd hand Chinese CDI.

The 2nd hand CDI came from a stripped Chinese scooter, and at the time of installment it clearly didn’t look new. I have no idea for what distance the CDI has been used on the Chinese scooter, but at this stage the 2nd hand Chinese CDI still refuses to die.

In short - to my experience there is no proof that the cheaper Chinese CDI’s are any worse than a genuine Kymco CDI.
