Xciting 400i Gear Oil Level Confirmation
« on: January 21, 2019, 11:00:02 PM »
I decided to do the first service this weekend on my 400i.

Before draining the gear box oil, I went for short ride to warm up the oil. Measured 200ml and filled the gear box. The oil started dripping out of the filler hole before the measured oil was used up. I waited for the oil to stop dripping and replaced the bolt.

Everything I see states that gear oil level is correct when its below the filler hole. The oil seems to be laying right on the lower part of filler hole threads.

For those of you who do your own fluid changes. Based on my description. Do you think the gear oil level is correct?

Thank you.

Did you measure the oil you removed?
Often a service manual will list two amounts....
one for an oil change, another -larger- amount for a rebuild refill.

It would be nice if the procedure was to just refill until it drips out - then cork it up. But not always the case....they specify an amount.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

It says .20 Liter when changing and .23 Liter at factory. I didnt measure the oil removed.

If your instructions say "just below hole"....then you're good, no worries.

There is a measuring dipstick area on the oil cap, that is what I use. I put in .2 L and then add up as needed.

I do not think his gear oil case has a dipstick.
Many scooters do not these days.

The oil fill cap has a measuring stick attached. It shows in the manual what is a good fill area on the stick.

For the engine or the final drive gearbox? That is Stig's point. Since so far, Kymco's have a stick in the engine and no stick in the gearbox. Additionally, it is typical to have a measured amount of oil in the gearbox well below the fill hole.

Karl, Stig, I am sorry, was thinking about the Engine oil. The dealer mechanic told me to fill the Gear oil until it runs out. The bike should be level and put on the center stand. I measure my liquid with a syringe and at roughly .21 litres, the gear oil runs out of the plug hole. He also told me it is better to have a little less oil than trying to overfill it.

Measured mine when draining. 200ml out. Measured 200ml and poured it back in. Didn't over run the filler hole.
Matched the instructions and left it at that. After first 20 miles, checked for leaks. Good to go...
