..carburetor's rubber seal shrunk..
« on: September 02, 2010, 11:07:35 PM »
..okay, i'm stupid..let me start off by putting that out there...

..i swapped out my 20mm carb for the oem while troubleshooting my a50's past carbon build-up delima...

..well, i left the bowl slightly open after i drained it, and a disturbing thing happened..

..the formed, rubber seal has shrunk..

..to the point that i cannot make it fit the machined groove...

..my question is...does anybody have an idea how i might..swell the seal???

..tried hot water/stretching...nope..don't work...

..soaked it in penetrating fluid for a cpl hours...didn work either...

..i need this carb on my guilty, and now i'm stuck...

What about heating whith a hair dryer and fitting it while hot?
ZX50, 47mm cyl. kit, TZR50 CDI. Michelin Pilot Sport tyres,
Next performance mod; pumping the tyres up.

..tried it...it doesn't stretch when heated much more than when cold..

..and it retains it's new "set" almost instantly...

Duct tape!  Once they go that far I don't know if it can be brought back. You could try a tranny restore type product saposed to restore and swell rubber, but I know if you let soak too long it will break it down.
I ran this stuff in a wet clutch once that had a dried up seal it did actually work but I left it in for a couple of day and ran the bike. Buy that time it had eaten all the rubber out of all the seals, another side affect was it cleaned the holy crap out of that side of the motor  :o

I got engine oil on the rubber "seal" between the engine crankcase and the variator cover because the engine was spilling oil and the mechanic sayd that the rubber was swolen becuase of the oil....

So maby if you leave it in engine oil you will make is bigger. I dont know if it will happen very slowly or it might destroy the seal but you can try if you want.

I'm pretty sure I remember from somewhere, that rubber has shrink and expansion properties the opposite of most materials. It shrinks when heated unlike most stuff. Toss your seal in the fridge for a while then see if it fits before it reaches room temperature. Can't hurt.
