Cobra Cross (Top Boy) 50cc advice please?
« on: February 21, 2019, 11:14:38 PM »
Hi.
I completed my CBT 2 weeks ago and today, I became the proud owner of a Kymco Cobra Cross.
I have had some previous experience with basic car mechanics but never touched a bike and want to be able to fix basic stuff on mine but searches online for a service manual or something similar for my bike have got me nowhere so far.
It's running fine at the moment but the fuel gauge isn't working and there is a problem with the headlights which I am taking to a garage to hopefully get sorted tomorrow but I have no idea how to even get into the headlights to change a bulb!
Is there somewhere I can go for a manual or pointers, etc so I don't have to run to a garage over every little thing? I am in the UK if that's relevant?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Hi Sparxkeeper,

Have you got a picture of the bike? It's not one I'm familiar with...

I just googled it and it looks almost exactly like one I had a decade ago, although that was a "Yiben". I loved that scooter! Let me know if you're ever looking to move it on.

I'm very, very hazy on it but I think you get to the headlight by removing the front panel that the headlight is mounted into - I think it's four screws in the legshield in front of your knees that then allows it to be taken out. The bulb is almost certainly a "BA20D" type - Bosch fitting, 25 or 35 watt.

For the fuel guage, it might just be a naff connection - the fuel sender is on top of the fuel tank and sometimes where it plugs into the loom can just get a little cruddy. I'd start there!

Hi Viper, thanks for your help.

Well it turns out, me being the dumbass that I am, was just attempting to turn the headlights on wrong. To be fair though, there are 2 switches and both need to be on WHILE the engine is ACTUALLY running in order for the lights to work so I can be forgiven for thinking they didn't work.   :D

As for the fuel gauge, I was told when I picked it up that they had filled it up for me a couple days ago so rode it a good 20 miles or so home while the fuel gauge was showing empty (I could see there was fuel in the tank but not how much). I ran out on the way to work today and had to fill up using a can. When I started her up again, the fuel gauge was working so I don't know if it's just a bit sticky or if I was actually pretty much out of fuel and she let me go that far on red. Time will tell with that one, I guess.

According to the bike breakers, these bikes don't normally go for 20 years and I have the 2000 one. He seemed quite impressed with the condition she is in.

Trying to upload a pic that meets the file size requirements, please bear with me.

Thank you.

I hope to do her justice and take very good care of her. Still no luck in finding a manual or anything similar but now I know she is working well, I am gonna open her up to take a look and have a tinker tomorrow. My thinking is that if I get used to how it's meant to look in there while she's working then I will be able to spot the problem if something goes wrong.

Hoping to take her to a bike mechanic next week for a check over just for my own peace of mind despite the fact the mot isn't due til October.
