Engine drop out at High Speeds

Hey Everybody,

My 700 mile old People 150 is doing a weird thing.


When I drive at high speeds, the engine will suddenly drop out for a split second. It feels like I've lost all power. Then suddenly it returns. Has anybody else had this happen?

Most times, it's after driving at high speeds (55 to 60 MPH) for 5 miles or more. After those 5 miles, I can either be accelerating, or even just coasting. It's happened 4 times now, in the past 2 weeks.

I of course took it in for a warranty repair, but the shop can't duplicate it. I think they are afraid to drive it that fast, because it's only really happened at full throttle.

Please let me know your thoughts.

It  sounds like fuel starvation. If so, the engine is using more fuel than the tank can supply. Check your fuel line and filters for blockages/restrictions and your fuel cap vent for blockage.

I've also seen this behavior in other scooters (not a P150, specifically) where the CDI or the ignition coil is going bad.

Thanks for the suggestions. As this is practically brand new, I'm taking it to the dealer. I'm first trying to figure out when the issue is occuring myself, because they couldn't make it happen during a short drive. They did suggest fuel starvation when I first brought it in, though.

New issue came up, possibly related, possibly not. At stops, the engine is now revving on its own, and the bike is trying to move. The mechanic said he adjusted the idle last time in. I'm sure that's what's causing the revving, could it also be causing my dropouts?

This makes me suspect a carb issue could be the cause of both.

 Hmm. I just ran into something else with the people 150 and s200 Niether gas cap is vented properly. This could cause the dieing and the surge i would suspect air idle screw has been turned to to counter this problem. Just a thought still playing with this. A hole drilled through the top of the cap seems to have fixed the s200 so far.

Well, just got he bike back after 1 week and I think it's fixed!!!

The shop replaced the carburetor, (under warranty). So far so good, (knocks on wood). It feels smoother, and after a 3 mile ride at 60 MPH, no drop outs.

Also, it now starts with one click on the electric starter. From day 1, when I drove it off the showroom floor, I needed to press the starter 3 or 4 times, for it to kick over.

I'm cautiously optomistic the dealer nailed it. Last experiment is to take the highway home with the engine a little colder. That was when I had the dropouts the most. If I make it home without incident, I'll declare it fixed

Ugh, spoke too soon. The cutouts seem to have stopped. I rode the bike on the highway, and WOT for a while, and it felt great.

But...Now it stalls at startup and for the first 10 minutes when the engine is cold. This is new, unfortunately. The shop thinks there may be a valve problem, that could have been the issue all along.

Given the increase in performance when warm, however, I think the carb must have been at least a part of the problem. It's SO much better now.

I'm gonna keep checking in with the shop until it's right. After all, I still only have 800 miles.

Going back to the shop for the idle mix screw adjustment. They told me last time, if I still had problems, that was next on the list. It's a brand new bike still under warranty, so I'm letting the dealer do it all. Plus, they are only 5 miles away, so its pretty easy for me to just take it there.
