Just completed 2000 mile cold trip--2019 XTown 300i
« on: March 24, 2019, 03:08:50 PM »
Just got back from 8-9 day trip with my Xtown 300i----Some comments follow-----8 or 9 states.

Bike fine, no troubles, added 2-3 oz of oil at  half way point....probably not necessary.

Today off comes the Givi E-46 box, on goes cheap Bestem smaller box.....reason=too much weight above on/ behind rear axle center and side wind area. Two Ortleib rubber bags on passenger seat/top box//8lb dog----make bike top heavy, not much fun in severe cross winds.

MPG 60-70 mpg in round numbers.  Once in a while tank of super----which really probably makes no difference.

Temps---30's to high 60's. Only rained at nite.

Wore Aerostich Kombat Lite boots----perfect for trip and temperatures involved, high quality, all day comfortable, jeans tuck in nice, so no pants flapping.   Riding outfit----Aero Darien jacket and pants( note jacket designed for forward lean position of motorcycle, so you end up sitting on rear tails....causing some pulling on shoulders in 8 hour day----this for scooter riders/cruiser riders.   My mistake that I did not take my feather jacket liner, instead used feather shirt and vest(these things purchased in south are not warm!!)  Darien pants work but not so comfortable for me....even thought I am on second pair.  Darien jacket is my second and soon worn out....they seem to last about 150,000 miles.  Langlitz gloves for cold mornings, Aero elkskin ropers for warmer daytime..
So rather than Darien stuff, I might have been  more comfortable with nice designed/comfortable  loose fitting leather jacket with big feather jacket as liner, rain jacket over when real cold.  Pants heavy duty jeans, my Joe Rocket rain pants over for extreme cold or wet.

Now....biggest mistake....Wore 3 lb Vega 3/4 with face shield=too heavy for my neck....I prefer my 2 lb GMAX 3/4  with long visor....makes riding into sun tolerable!.

Now windshields---my base line for all day comfort----BMW 500 equipped with Heinrich fairing and legshields....bought my first 1959, last 1976----anything less makes all day ride for me not fun----so this time Kymco with stock shield and bolted on Laminar Lip---no buffeting, provides good look over, whole arrangement a little narrow for winter use.   Going to put my Puig Touring back on/ride before I cut down....if I ever cut down.

I like performance of XTown 300...having had 2 Silverwing 600's, two Burgman 400's,, one Reflex and 4 Helix....and over 400,000 miles in recent years.

Hey John! Where you at? How many miles/day? Freeways or side roads? How is Bowser doing?

You are an inspiration, John. I'm 81 and if you can do it maybe I can, too.

I am 80 in May---this trip about 50/50 freeway and backroads---dog ok.   Weather/wind/cold made some days just over 200 miles.

No need to hurry----road conditions at times terrible, so didn't hurry.

Right clothes/ right windshield really work   I stop often, gas every 100 miles in strange territory.

I took wrong helmet---I have been at this since 1955 and still make equipment mistakes.  Maybe I have too much to pick from?

John,

Thanks for the detailed account. I will use your list of equipment as I collect more, and better, gear. Keep us informed. I value your advice.

Your trip review of the XTown is making me think about it more, since they dropped the 400i. It is definitely a good looking ride.

The price,, the XTown 300 I is really good deal---scooter market in US is near dead right now.   I am really impressed with build quality of the XTown and the on the road performance/feel/handling.....all the time remembering it is a scooter/needs to be ridden like scooter.  It is my 10th new maxi-scooter since 1990.
