UXV 450i Two Weeks In - So Far, So Good!
« on: March 25, 2019, 02:41:03 PM »
Well folks, just figured I'd give you another update on how my new UXV 450i is faring. Bottom line: so far, so good! All in all, I've been impressed so far. Over the past two weekends, I've put about 50 miles on the machine - boy, it's amazing how many miles you can drive going nowhere! My son and I have been exploring some of the old surface mines throughout the area. We are fortunate enough to live in an area where you can go a short distance down the paved road from our house and get into a labyrinth of old mine roads and off-road trails. So, no shortage of places to ride and any kind of terrain you can imagine, from generally wide, smooth roads to narrow, rocky trails, mud-filled bogs, steep climbs and wide-open "playgrounds" where you can just cut loose. I got in one of those areas yesterday and did about 10 donuts, which my 13-year-old just thought was wonderful. I thought it was pretty fun too!  ;D

I haven't "babied" the machine so far, per se, but I've also been pretty conscious about taking it easy on the throttle (haven't gunned her yet) and not asking to much of her. So far, however, she seems to be able to handle just about anything you want. After yesterday's two-hour ride, my son actually remarked that he thought the machine has been pretty impressive so far. "I thought we would break something," he said. Well, not yet, anyway. And hopefully not anytime soon.

As for power, the engine seems sufficient. One thing that kind of surprises me is how high the RPMs go under normal use - seems to run between 4,000-6,000 a lot of the time when under power. That's probably perfectly normal for an ATV/UTV, but being used to driving a regular highway vehicle where you are typically running between 2,000-3,000 RPM, it seems high. However, I notice that the tachometer goes up to like 9,000 RPM, so I guess 4,000-6,000 is only about mid-range for this type of engine. I do know that going up the paved road back to my house, the machine has no trouble doing/maintaining 30+ mph without coming close to putting the accelerator all the way down. And when going downhill, you can easily get to 40 mph+ again without asking for all she's got. On steeper climbs, I've been careful to use Low gear and just kind of crawl up at like 8-10 mph. She isn't setting any speed records up those hills, but doesn't seem to be struggling. And with as rocky as lot of the trails are, I don't think you'd really want to go any faster anyway, as you need to steer carefully.

About the only problem I've experienced so far is that before our ride yesterday, I went into the garage and found the driver's side rear tire completely flat! Not sure what happened, but I obviously must have driven over a sharp rock or something on Saturday because it now has a slow leak. I was able to pump it back up and I closely monitored the pressure all day and found it was losing about 2 psi per hour. So, that was good enough to do our thing yesterday. We just stopped every now and then to check the pressure, and I added some air a couple times. I am going to stop today on the way home and get a bottle of sealant to hopefully plug that up. It's just kind of a shame, because the tires are obviously brand new. But, it is an off-road vehicle, after all. These things are bound to happen.

Here's a quick summary of my impressions of the machine so far, plus a few photos for you all!

THE GOOD: A sharp-looking machine with definite cool factor, capable suspension, comfortable seat, easy steering, useful dump bed, TONS of storage, comfortable seat belts that really come in handy on steep downhills, relatively compact width makes machine really nimble in the woods (I got through several ATV trails where a 60-inch machine would have NO chance!)

THE NOT AS GOOD: A little noisy under power, seems a little squeaky in the back under the bed when you're bouncing around, turning radius could be tighter (lots of three-point turns needed in tight quarters), oil dipstick in a hard-to-reach location, the little cables that hold the tailgate like to twist when you put the gate up and down (you have to watch them when closing or they like to get caught between the bed and gate)

Your findings are about the same things the rest of us have found with our machines. Newer models seem to have more noise complaints. While my 2015 model is not quiet we have no problem having a conversation while riding down the trail. Clipping along at 40 mph is definetly much noisier. Your machine red lines at 7500rpm and should have a rev limiter when you hit that rpm.  These things are not designed to drive down the highway at 45 mph for periods of time due to he high rpm.  Engines wont stay together for long at 7000rpm for long periods of time. However they are like riding a mountain goat when you get off trail, and this is there strong point!  Sorry to hear about that flat tire but that happens frequently when going off road. Find the hole and plug it would be best.  Sealant works fine but can be a mess when you want to remove the tire off the rim.  Looks like you live in an awesome place to own a UTV!  Where are you if I might ask?  Keep us posted and add pics please!

I am in Schuylkill County, PA. This is (or WAS, to a large extent, as only a fraction of the mines that once existed are still in operation) coal country, and the amount of mining activity that has occurred on the local mountains over the past century has created an almost unfathomable number of trails for adventurous off-roaders to explore.

That sounds totally awesome, is it open to the public?  Trails marked?  If so we may want to visit there..

If you are thinking about visiting this area to ride, I'd suggest checking out one of the two LARGE off-road parks here. Both offer literally hundreds of miles of trails and have maps and other resources available. Being from out of the area, this would get you riding right away. A lot of the places where people ride around here are sort of "no man's land" areas that would be hard to find on your own...

Understand, we have some similiar areas around here,  from your description it sounds like an awesome place to have in your neighborhood.  Was just hoping it might be a place that others could enjoy.  We had a real nice ride area some years back, hills, woods, creek, tight trails, owned by underground pipeline company.  Public abused the area with trash, drinking, drugs etc until they fenced it off to the public. Take good care of any area you have and appreciate the opportunity to use it!

That's basically what happened with that AOAA area. So, rather than shut it down to the public, they created a governmental authority to oversee and regulate it. Now, it costs $175 for an annual pass. It used to be free. However, now they also have rules and regulations, some staff to patrol, special events, etc. All in all I'd say it's a good thing. I haven't actually been to either of those areas but my understanding is they are nice and off-road enthusiasts come from far and wide to use them. Like I said, there are plenty of places to ride just a stone's throw from my place, but they are pretty much a free for all. If you get stuck or run into any other problem back in there, you better have your own plan for how you're going to solve it...

Hey PA.
I live in Tioga county just a little north of you folks I've have a 2018 700LE prime unit and yeah it's a blast something you might want to check ( cause I don't know if this applies to the 450's ) I ran into a bit of trouble the other day my friend wanted to try my machine so I let him drive and I rode shotgun we went into the woods on his property when my machine up and died. couldn't figure out what was going on at first then I noticed a wire hanging down underneath the bed and I thought it must've gotten snagged on something and came loose so I checked it and it fired right back up so we went a few more yards and it died again and I went through the process again and this went on till we got it back to the house. ended up taking it back to the dealer to try and diagnose the problem and after a little bit of discussing we came to the conclusion that it wasn't the wiring. what it happened was it was the first time somebody was in the passenger seat and just below it sits the fuel tank. and the fuel line comes out of the tank and routes through between the seat and the seat mount frame. now there is just enough play between the seat and frame that when you hit a bump that the fuel line is loose enough to come out of its notch and pinches between the seat and frame and my fat butt was cutting off the fuel supply !   :D we all got a good laugh out of that one so we zipped tied it down and she has been fine since.

That's actually pretty funny! Your buddy probably told you to go on a diet.

I've had a number of people in the passenger seat with me on the 450i already, and no issues. The 450 has a bench seat as opposed to the bucket seats in the 700, so it's a different configuration. The fuel pump compartment is under the seat, but there's a good bit of clearance between the two, and also a small plastic door you have to remove to get to the fuel pump. So, doesn't sound like nearly the clearance issues you discovered.

Anyhow, glad to hear you figured out what the problem was and got it fixed without too much hassle. And glad to hear you are enjoying your machine as I am mine!
