Breaking in a brand new engine.
« on: April 15, 2019, 02:16:48 AM »
Hi All,

Last week I took delivery of my brand new Yamaha X-Max 250.

According to the owner's manual, the recommended break in procedure is:

1) First 1000km, do not exceed 4500RPM
2) 1000km - 1600km, do not exceed 5400RPM

#1 makes no sense! at 4500RPM the max speed achievable is only 80km/h which is a crazy limit as I commute 90km return every day.
Also prolonged RPM at the same revs is to be avoided. So I am going up and down the speedo just to have variable RPMs.
Also I have limited the max rev to 6000RPM until I get to 1000km.

What's your take on the break in procedures?

:D :D :D  I broke my scooters hard the first 25 miles as per moto USA.    I have a steep hill near the house  WOT up the hill to 70 MPH ,   and down the hill start at 65 MPH.  and close throttle,   around 25 miles go home and change the oil  hot,  reg. oil ,   then ride it normaly with speed up then slow down coast,.  I did that at 65 miles per hour,.   at 600 miles full speed ahead and start using full syn. oil,   the gear box full syn. from the start  at 87 .000 Km. my downtown runs like a new scooter,  did the same with my Piaggio B V 350,  if we ever get rid of the snow here,  we can ride every day again,    snow to night with freezing rain in the morning ,  Uge   Uge ,<>?":

I rely on the folks who built my scooter for the correct procedure.
Probably puts me in the minority....
I've only had 4 scooters and a handful of motorcycles - all  from new.
None have ever burned oil.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.
