Gear Oil. GL-5.
« on: April 19, 2019, 05:37:29 AM »
Hi All,

I am in the mist of buying my gear oil for the rear end.

In the owner's manual the recommended is a SAE 85W GL-3. Now those that tried looking for a GL-3 gear oil would know that it has been discontinued. Replaced by GL-4/GL-5 and recently a GL-6 has been introduced into the market. The rating was established by the folks that created the API standard.

I would happily go the GL-5 route as it is easily available. But it seems there are claims that the GL-4/5 will corrode the yellow metals in a gearbox. So my question is does scooter gear boxes have any yellow metals?

I tried looking into scooter specific gear oils but Shell, Castrol, Yamaha and they all are mineral with no info on their API service classification ratings.

And help would be great.

Thanks.

I have been using Super Tech (Walmart store brand) synthetic gear oil since 2009 in all our Kymco's. No problems so far. Back to the old saying, "Any oil is better than no oil."
