Trouble with LIKE's mirror mount
« on: May 15, 2019, 03:49:50 PM »
6 years ago I purchased a set of long stemmed mirrors for my LIKE200iLX.
The seller, a mirror specialist, sent me 2 pcs of hardware to adapt his 10mm mirror stem to my 8mm mounting hole.
All were right hand thread.

Recently I've had trouble with the mirror refusing to stay in place. The long stem leverages a lot of torque on the mount on bumpy roads....and unscrews it.

Tried my 10 yr old blue locktight, star washers, etc. without success. I know better than to overtighten that little 8mm adapter - lest I snap off that short tip or, worse - strip the threads in the hole (which would involve replacing the L side brake reservoir!)

Found a longer adapter in spares box - so will try this, a new star washer and some fresh blue locktight after using alcohol to clean up both threads. Perhaps the longer threaded (black) adapter will do the trick.

Open to any suggestions for some kind of magic washer, etc.!

Loctite red is a bit stronger than blue and can still be unscrewed, believe it or not. Blue is pretty light stuff, that's why they called it "screw-lock." Don't know what they call it these days...

Might be a dumb question, but which way is the star washer oriented?  I think they are usually designed to prevent counterclockwise rotation, but make clockwise easier.  I don't remember offhand whether the mirrors are right/left hand thread on each side.

To my mind the problem is caused by the short adapter you're using between mirror stem and the handle bracket. Specially the shiny adapter (bottom, right on the picture - with the short male thread) is not suitable for an application like this . The threaded part on that adapter is WAY too short, and doesn't penetrate the handle bar bracket sufficiently to ensure a firm grip at the threaded part of the handle bar.

To be honest, I don't think any washers or Locktite products will solve your problem - rather get adapters with longer threaded parts, or make up an adapter - and you should be fine. If the threaded parts on an adapter is long or deep enough, there should be no need for any lock washers, or Locktite products.

I also did an almost similar modification some time ago, and just used long 8mm Nuts which are threaded right through. Ad the bottom of the nuts I just used a longish piece of 8mm rod, applied some red Loctite on the one end - and then screwed that part of the rod quite deep into the long nut. I then just left it for a while, and afterwards just screwed the threaded part of the new adapters normally into the handle bars - without using any Locktite or lock washer.
Then I just screwed the mirror stems into the long nuts, and tightened the locking nuts on the mirror stems normally - without using any washers or Loctite. So far the mirrors took a couple of hard knocks on bumpy roads, and everything is still rock solid.

A picture of my modification can be seen below.

Your's is not a dumb question....
I stared at inside star washers and outside star washers...then asked 3 guys at Autozone the difference.
H_llsBells - now you bring up another whole point. I bet you're right. Probably does matter which way they are oriented!
Well, I put some at two points, cleaned threads with alcohol,  applied new blue loctite to longer adapter....
Couple days see how it works.
I'll google up star washers, make coffee and learn something new! Thanks for the tip.

Yep, reassembled with longer adapter, star washers and fresh loctite.
Will see how it works in a couple of days.

As far as orientation on star washers is concerned - external star washers are jagged on both sides and can not be installed “upside down”.  I.e. - when it gets flipped over, the jagged sides are still facing the correct / same directions. External star washers get used at the “nut side” of a threaded rod, or bolt.

I haven’t used internal star washers yet - but to my understanding the one side of at least some internal washers are flat, and the other side of he washers are staggered. Apparently these washers get used at the “head side” of bolts  with the staggered side facing the “head side” of a bolt.

OK, no joy today.
Stupid mirror started moving again 15 mins into my ride this morning.

As I said - used the longer adapter, fresh star washers, cleaned all with alcohol and wire brush, Used fresh blue Loctite. Let it sit a couple of days.

Will #1, apply red Loctite to the lower portion of the adapter (the 8mm threaded stub) because that is where it is coming loose.
And #2, check front tire air pressure to insure that I'm not beating up the mirror unnecessarily.

6 years in and this mirror is playing up - I shouldn't fuss. (the R hand mirror still has the orig. short adapter & hasn't moved in years)
