Headlight circuit mod for DT300i
« on: August 12, 2019, 12:05:06 AM »
Cooked up a project to turn off the low beam headlamps prior to start. I would like to turn off ALL the lights prior to start but that would be a major insult to the wirng harness and I ain't that eager! What fries my butt is the bikes in most other countries have a LIGHT SWITCH for the operator to, ah, operate when he/she (that's us!) decide it is neccessary. Anyway, this scheme will  interupt the power to the low beam relay coil by a switch on the right handlebar switch cluster where the oem lightswitch would be if this was an offshore model. I will post pictures to the best of my ability  which will include how I took one of YOUR suggestions to sub a 5 buck aftermarket auto relay for the 26 dollar oem relay.

So you're saying that the US model DT300i doesn't have a off switch for the low beam? I didn't know all this time. But turning off the relay coil would work.

No, mouse, no switch for headlamps in continental US, Alaska (do they even have roads?) and Hawaii ! Even GM cars have virtually NO WAY to turn off the headlights. Well, they do but you gotta do it every time. Our KIA mommymobile (minivan) has the ability to either have the lights on auto or all off. Our Chevy Spark (made in Korea by Daewoo) the lights come on every start and you gotta move the light switch knob to turn them off. Even a simple time delay on the Kymcos would make starting more assured, in my opinion.

Done! Put a rocker switch in the low beam relay coil circuit to kill the "always on" 5-6 amp draw during starting. 11.5 volts before start is now 12.2 volts! Big deal when 10.5 volts during start is the bottom! First picture is the adapter that was suggested between the harness plug and auto relay with the switch plugged in. Second picture is the tiny switch in operational position.

Very good job. I do like the look of the switch, it makes sense to put it near the low/high beam selector.

Aye, thank you, mouse! Would have been at home on right where they put the light switch on non- US models but would have been a nightmare of dis- and re-assembly.

Update: STARTS WAY BETTER! Still starts on second revolution but the turns are faster! Fires right up! Worth the trouble of making the mod, in my opinion.
