New Tires
« on: September 14, 2010, 10:59:32 PM »
So I have made the decision to go ahead and upgrade to some new (read non-Cheng Shin) tires.

After exhaustive research, I found the Word is on top of it when he suggested the Avon Viper Stryke AM63 tires as they are very well reviewed by all.

Found a local motorcycle shop that will mount the tires on the scooter.  But seems expensive for mounting up to $65 for the rear tire because they have to remove the exhaust etc.

Is that price out of line?   I never take my scoot in for service so I have no idea what the going rate for service is.

I thought $65 seemed high.

And from what I can tell from talking to the guys in the shop, they aren't exactly busy there.

Maybe I can negotiate with them.

It would suck to pay $80 for the tires and $130 for the mounting.

Right now Bike Bandit seems to be the cheapest.

Motorcycle Superstore didn't have the right size.  Apparently there are 'front' tires, 'rear' tires, and 'front/rear' tires.

The front tires at Motorcycle Superstore didn't come in the 120/70 size for 12 inch rims.

Of course, I could go with the 'rear' tires on the front - the 120/70 size is available for 12 inch rims.

What exactly is the difference between a 'front' and a 'rear' tire anyway?

..front is 120-70-12...

..rear is 130-70-12...

..i got my tires at motorcyclesuperstore...

..they DO have both sizes..and they are tried and tru, first quality tires..

..there are some tire sites that sell cheaper tires, but they are not top quality..may be a small defect..(balance issue)...

..the avon is a front/rear tire...

..both sizes are listed on their site as "rear" tires...

Thanks for clearing that up.

I wondered why the had them listed separately on the site.

I noticed that Bike Bandit lists all three types of tires to select from in the list (front, rear, front/rear).  They also did not have a 120/70 12 in a 'front' tire, but like I said they had both sizes available in the front/rear list.

Oh, my writing skills are failing - I really phrased that wrong.

These are the same Avon Viper Stryke AM 63 tires - just a different store selling them.  They seem a little more expensive than Motorcycle Superstore (maybe $5-$8 all tolled).

They also don't deliver to the installer like the Superstore.  So I guess I'll have to decide if I want to put on over each shoulder or jam them around my neck so I look like the Michelin Man.
