Like 200i at Lower Otay Lakes in SoCal
« on: September 01, 2019, 04:43:26 PM »
After another training session with cones, I rode to Lower Otay Lakes in my neighborhood (San Diego, south county). There's a few "twisties" along the path but no challenge at 25 mph. I shared the road with bicycle riders, illegal aliens, and big trucks towing nice fishing boats.

The bicycle riders looked at me like I wasted two wheels with a motor. The undocumented ducked for cover and the fishermen looked at me like my 160 cc's of blissful noise would scare the fish away.

Nonetheless, I prevailed and took a picture from the parking lot. Another ride in the "fun" column.

I spent a lot of my Navy tour in San Diego including a year of shore duty. The secondary roads around the area are just wonderful. I used to ride my BMW R69 out east and south many times.

Like many in San Diego, I'm retired Navy - senior enlisted. I agree with your assessment of the secondary roads ... hell, they're even fun on four wheels. But the advent of cell phones and prevalence of driving distractions is enough to keep me on my toes. Depending on when you rode your BMW, you might be surprised how real estate to the east and south has been developed. Lots of tract homes where cows used to roam.

Thanks for checking in.

Oh I can imagine that was a lot of valuable real estate out there. My wife and I also had a Datsun 1600 roadster which was a blast on those same roads. I served from '67-'70 so a lot has changed.

Used to ride my restored 1955 BSA 650 A-10 out that very road to Borderland Air Sports center to fly jumpers, gliders and tow planes! This was in '74 before they split the air ops and moved the gliders else where and before they started to build houses on the side of those hills!

Makes me think of the very first day I got brave enough to ride my new scoot through traffic commuting to & from work.
On my way home I very nearly over-shot my turning because a lady on a brand new Harley was laying under her bike in my corner.
She stopped at  the stop sign, it rolled back on her and she fell over. Took 3 of us to get it off of her.
The two folks in the dance video will need help if they drop 'em.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

I was stationed in San Diego from 86-89.  I typically rode between 250 and 500 miles on Saturdays and repeated that on Sunday.  I considered SoCal to be motorcycle heaven.

Here is a pic of my EX500 at Otay Lakes.  Back then Otay lakes was out in the country.  The nearest development was still at least 2-3 miles away.

So many Navy on here, I'm hearing Bo'sun's pipes! I was Navy out there before getting busted to pfc (poor civilian). Left in 77 for the deep south. Otay Lakes, Pio Pico, and the gliderport/drop zone plus Brown Field were regularly visted by that BSA of mine. Trips to Mount Palomar and the Borrego Springs and Julian were wonderful on a motorcycle!
