1st major Piaggio serv $600
« on: October 26, 2019, 06:39:06 PM »
Acquaintance paid $600 for his first 6,000 mile service for the Liberty150i ABS at the dealer.
Oils, filters, belt, rollers and valves. Parts are @$75, labor for the remainder.
Even though booked well in advance ...dealer didn't have rollers or airfilter in stock!

I thought $380 for my LIKE200ILX was crazy. Over 10% of scoot's cost.
He paid 20% !*
When quoted that price 7 yrs ago I decided rather than pay it I'd teach myself scooter mechanics!
Cyclepedia.com was the biggest help, along with this forum!

Stig
*told him I'd a 'done it for $550, and given him coffee and a bun!😊

New belt, rollers and valves at 6K miles????? I would have to question his dealers integrity.

What Yellow Jacket said! 600 bucks! On a SCOOTER!? On a small motorcycle!? I must, no, MUST know where this is! Just general location in the country, so I will have no idea of exact location. Don't need to know EXACT location. That would not be good....

You are mistaken to question the dealer, for it is exactly as specified in the Piaggio service manual.

New valves at 6000 miles?? I've owned several vehicles that have gone over 150000 miles and never had to replace any valves. Don't believe I've ever heard of replacing valves as part of routine maintenance. If the replacement was part of a recall, that should have been covered under warranty.

the valve lash is measured at 6K, and adjusted if necessary

OK, now I get it, valve adjustment, not replacement. Even at that, $525 labor seems very high. I sold my BV250 6 years ago. Part of the deal was that I would do a complete service on the bike when needed at no charge for labor. Four years later I get a call and was asked if I would still honor that. I did as promised. Did everything, including changing brake fluid. If it wasn't a bike I sold I would have done the work for about half of what your acquaintance paid. Of course I don't have the overhead a shop would have.

my first service on my piaggio b v 350 cost $ 180.00   mostly check up every thing and oil change,.   then at 10,000 Km. I did the valves  my self,.  cost $ 10.00 for the shim took me 1 hour,.  dealer quoted me over $ 200,00, all I did was remove the seat and tub, 1 hose ,  then the valve shim,   I have 70 years of tools to help,

I am on my 3rd service by the book ,  now over 32,000 Km.s  and winter is closing in below freezing in the AM.  but still riding in the afternoons,  it is a dirty job but someone has to do it, my scooter gets lonesome for me and keeps calling,  I hear it now but it is after midnite here,  I may have to go out and pet it for awhile,  what is this about second child hood ????

You are mistaken to question the dealer, for it is exactly as specified in the Piaggio service manual.

From a owners manual I found online most is correct though the rollers are specified as inspect at 10K kilometers  (6,200 miles) and replace at 20K kilometers  (12,400 miles). Funny the 125 version has a inspection on the drive belt at 10K kilometers and replacement at 20K kilometers vs the 150. Also see that Piaggio states labor time for the 10K kilometer service is 140 minutes (approx 2.3 hours).

If you are going to have someone do work they should offer you the old parts or ask for them back to make sure they are not replacing parts that aren't necessary yet and don't be afraid to ask someone else for a second opinion.
