My 2019 XTown 300i ABS at about 9,000 miles
« on: January 29, 2020, 04:37:23 PM »
My XTown 300i is now in its final form......Givi E-46 box (1998 model), hole cut in top for dog's head, over 500,000 miles on box---heavy but it does not seem to bother handling much-----I have it bolted directly to rear wing/passenger handle...rack Givi sent me  did not work (Monokey), so the direct bolting.   I have tried smaller Bestem box, but need the bigger carrying capacity of the Givi.

Windshield: the XTown 300 is my 11th new Maxi scooter since 1990, so I have lots of experience with crappy OEM windshields (that don't work)  lots of buffeting in over 400,000 miles---For the Kymco selection of aftermarket windshields is limited, but I found Puig Touring, cut 4 inches for look over, is as good as it going to get, I have Laminar Lip I can bolt on, but at moment not used.------Stock shield, even with Laminar Lip bolted on is too NARROW for good cold weather operation.  Plus for Kymco---their method of windshield mounting on the XTown is really great, compared to Honda/Suzuki/Yamaha/Daelim I have experience with.

Other things: I like mirrors, have O-ring as throttle stop (cruise control) this is left over from my Kawasaki Concours.

At 10,000 miles I will change drive belt, check oil screen, read plug, check valve clearance.  I believe in frequent oil changes on engines with no oil filter---WalMart house brand 10-30 or 10-40 works for me.  This Kymco has been easy to work on/reliable....much better than Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki experiences I have had.   New Daelim in Korea never broke or nothing fell off--Puig windshield installed.

Next, at about 15,000 miles----I will buy new set of matched tires, install myself, use Ride-On as balance medium.

So far no warranty claims on this machine.

Wow I'm impressed 9k miles in one year on a scooter.  Just curious at what mileage to you usually get rid of the kymco or is it by time?

I try to trade at or just before 50,000 miles....or when bike is piece of crap.  9,000 miles in year is nothing-----serious riding you get 30-40,000 miles in year----one year in Germany did 56,000 miles in year, using bike on job---BMW R80RT----actually pretty crappy bike....some breaking all the time.  I try to use bike/scooter for everything and been doing it everyday since 1955.

John you sound a lot like me.  I am heading towards 1M miles of riding non stop for 48 years.   Many of those years were 40-50K per year commuting and splitting lanes in So cal.    Just got this 2011 i300 for my GF and amazed at it really.  Need to spend time on it as my feet and left hand are still lost about staying still and out of the game..  LOL!!  I agree with your BMW assessment.   (BMW = Bring Mo Money) My last was a 2005 K1200LT.   My first was a 1973 R75/5...   :>)    I see myself downsizing soon from my current 2012 Victory CCT touring barko lounger that is the most comfortable MC I have ever owned, and I have owned many.   Continued success to you.

Looking at my BMW bike ownership----1958 used R51/3 1954 first year of full hubs, R-27 new 1961...maybe the worst bike I  ever owned, went thru 4 engines and 2 transmissions in the first 10,000 miles (BMW paid) in Germany, 1983 new R80RT----junk, broke all the time, 1995 K-75, nice bike but got rid of it when warranty ran out.

I always thought of BMW as being a typical good example of fine German craftsmanship. This kind of information plus all the gripes on ADVrider.com PLUS my experiences with M-B and the Smart Car have changed my opinion.

I made a 12-hour flight on a P-3 out of Iwakuni in '71 to see how the zoomies did celestial nav. You there then?

I owned a BMW R65 for twelve years - 2001 to 2013. Wasn’t too bad, and quite easy to work on. During the same time I owned a Kawasaki GPZ 1100. Both bikes have been used for dayly commuting. When one of the bikes had a problem I just used the other bike untill I was able to get the broken bike going again. So the Bmw’s problems every now and then didn’t really bother me.
Life is a journey. Just spend some time, and enjoy the trip.
