The Great Virus/Toilet Paper Stampede & Attack
« on: March 17, 2020, 01:52:22 PM »
Daughter and I arrived to join the "Star Wars XVIII"- premier-like queue at our large local grocers today.
Up early, I geared up with armored jacket, boots, gloves, etc.
Daughter refused to wear my helmet ("No, my hair...!" she said)
Store opened at 7AM. We're in line at 6:45 behind @ 50, of the 150 competitors, in the dark.
I went for bread and cream cheese....daughter fell into 2nd line at rear of store queueing to one spot for "T-paper, Kleenex, hamburger, chicken and paper towels."

She scored a 30 pack, I my cheese, newspaper and bread.
She waited for me on the dark sidewalk in front of the store entrance with her giant pack of T-paper - this is where it gets scary.....
She was approached in such a way by 3 or 4 late comers - that a watching store security officer took her by the arm and advised her to wait inside, "for your safety" !
My daughter said, she was "ready for 'em!". Her prize was as a gift for her brother's family.

Lady in line in front of us said, "It's only going to get worse."

God bless the grocery stores for trying to keep up with this insanity.

If people simply didn't hord there would be pleanty . I blame the news media for creating the hording situation. Never let a crisis go to waste is the news motto.

Went to get frozen veggies but the only thing left was lima beans.

anybody checked the price of ammo lately ?  7.62x39 I bought a year ago is up over 30%, mostly the past 2 weeks, and it's hard to find the non-corrosive in bulk

I buy my TP at Staples, for my office, a 96 roll box, but I have recently retired, found jobs for my employees, and what is left over is probably a 5 year supply now

How's the UK fixed for toilet paper??
If good, could you estimate airpost for a 36 roll?
Thanks, Stig

You are so, so right.

We have three week's worth of food or so here. Haven't felt the urge to go and buy more...

we keep a rotating 9-12 month supply of food, we buy normal amounts as we constantly use the oldest, in summer, fresh from the garden,  much of what we have frozen, fruit & vegetable wise, we grew, we don't buy much sugar, except to feed our bees, at times.  We get more honey than we can use, we trade some for maple syrup from a neighbor

am I a prepper ?  I don't think so,  I count on the electrical grid, I can make my own for short periods during outages. I have the right amount of guns, I would like to have more ammo for my hunting guns especially a better stocked up variety of 12ga

It is my heritage, my parents canned produce when I was real young, but transitioned to a freezer, shortly after the Cuban Missile Crisis iirc.   My grandparents canned, my great grandparents canned. and used corn cobs in the outhouse.

Anyone that needs 144 rolls of tp for a 14 day stay at home should see a doctor as they have other issues besides worrying about a virus

in NH all schools have been closed a week already and minimum 2 more weeks, restaurants and bars are takeout only, special relief to allow bars to sell takeout beer & wine, banks are drive up only, or appointment, court cases have been continued

glad I replaced the motor in the driver side window

I have cubital tunnel surgery scheduled for Mar 30, something I wasn't sure would happen, a lot of elective surgeries are being postponed

this is gonna hit a lot of people HARD, kids home from school means either mom or dad hafta stay home and home school/supervise remote school.  depending on the job, both parents could be out of work

I'll be ok, I'm retired, or at least trying to be, I get my monthly SS deposit, and medicare & supplements take care of my medical needs BUT I guess that also puts me in a high risk group at least when I do work, I am socially isolated and physically isolated as well

That gave me a chuckle. I wondered whether they planned to use most of the TP to blow their nose in..? But apparently, an excess of tissues flushed down toilets is becoming a problem in some parts according to NYT.
Another problem I think has to do with pest control.
My area has large numbers of restaurants and eateries which are now shut down. I hope they won't turn into breeding grounds for vermin and worse: incubators for all kinds of bugs.

fwiw, I am in the wastewater industry, I have seen reports, mostly of handi-wipes clogging pump stations,

imho, the run on TP is cause a lot of people didn't buy TP before this pandemic, they stole it from work, now that people are working and educating at home, they are not going to work where they normally steal it, plus the greater demand for use at home

yup, I see this as a boon to my work, the majority of my work has been designing replacement onsite systems, excess TP will increase the demand for my work
