Kymco Agility 50 Clutch Probelms

I recently picked up a 50cc agility. It was running fine, but it was in need of a new belt. The old belt was worn down from 18mm to 15mm. By hand we pulled the rear clutch/pulley in order to get the belt out. After we put the new belt in I have experienced difficulty accelerating and it sounds as if the belt is loose. The only thing I can think of is the fact that the clutch won't shut ever since we pulled it open by hand. Can anyone help? I've run out of things to try.

Hi,

Sounds more likely to me that the belt you've put in is too big. Rear clutch pulleys rarely go all that wrong and rarely get stuck.

Did you compare the size of the old and the new? :)

The new belt I purchased is the correct size. I was finally able to take apart the clutch, and as soon as I put it back together it started to expand and close as normal. I am still experiencing slower than average speeds and I can't figure out why. I'm happy that the rear pulley is working now so I can at least ride it at a normal speed. Before I took apart the rear pulley it was stuck in the open position so the belt would be loose. I am still experiencing trouble accelerating and top speed is not what it it should be (with the adjustments I made such as the new belt and the unrestricted CDI, I think it should be going faster than 25mph.) I'll have to keep tinkering with it to try and get it up to speed. Thanks!

Check for roller wear in the variator up front as well.

I think it would make sense to strip and clean the clutch and variator pulleys completely, and to clean the inner shafts properly.
I think the fact that the clutch pulley got stuck, and the original belt got so thin, are indications that a dust built up on the inner shafts could prevent the pulleys from sliding in and out normally.

During previous clutch and variator services I noticed that the shafts on my scooter needed some cleaning.

Funny story.. when I bought the moped the previous owner said that it ran but hadn't been run in a while but everything worked fine. I rode the moped around town for a couple days without realizing what was in the rear pulley casing... An entire mouse nest! I had to clean it out and instantly saw better performance. I have noticed that the more I ride the bike the faster it is getting, I'm thinking the belt might have to be broken in but I'm not sure.

I think you have no option other than to remove the clutch assembly completely.
Parts of the mouse nest could still be stuck between the clutch and pulley - which will prevent the pulley part to move outwards to the top speed posision.
Like I mentioned before - it might make sense to disassemble the clutch and pully completely. Parts of the mouse nest can also be stuck at the inside of the clutch, wich will revent the clutch from working normally.
The inner shaft of the pully could also be rusted - caused by mouse urine. If that shaft is rusted the pulley will not slide in and out normally.

If you need quidamce about how to remove the clutch assembly and the big nut at the clutch, you could just have a look at some Youtube videos.

The Agility 50 should do about 40-42mph or so on the speedometer with a standard weight driver. The older ones, from the around 2008-2012 were faster. There are a couple restrictions on the bike. The CDI has a rev limiter build into it that you can cut out or replace with an unlimited CDI. The other is the clutch boss. You need to change that part with an unrestricted one.  That is the part that the front variator rides on.  You can also make sure you have 6.5g roller weights, the 4 slides on the variator are in good condition, and there are not flat spots on the rollers(which you said you did not have.) You may also upjet the carb to a 82 or 85.  There was also one year in which they put a restriction inside the intake manifold that needed to be popped out. You will have to check your laws on making modifications that may violate emissions or DOT guidelines in your state or country.

If you changed your belt, make sure it is a factory belt.  The OEM belt cost more but it is excellent and last longer than most aftermarket belts so it pays for itself over time.  It typically should be changed every 8-10k KM.  They typically snapped at 12-14km. If you are using an aftermarket belt, that could be your problem as I have seen numerous belts that say they fit an agility, but they are not the right size. Aftermarket Agility 50 belts are harder to find than the popular chinese belt sizes so it is easy to get the wrong one.  If the pulley got stuck, you should definitely clean it.  That should not happen. KYMCO pulleys usually last the life of the bike. Check your tire pressure.  Running low on pressure has a huge effect on speed and accelleration. And finally, if the bike sat, you could have a dirt dobber in your exhaust or a partially clogged carburetor.
