Have these in my jackets, and my pants. Stays pretty flexible even in the cold.

Impressed with your base layer recommendation, I’ve just ordered the hip & knee armour for my Bull-It jeans.  Hope it fits without any need for trimming!

Stig, that D30 armor is the real deal! Thick, soft and flexible. I have the D30 CE 2 elbow and shoulder in a mesh base layer from Bohn Armor. One of my favorite mesh high viz riding jackets fits loosely and the armor always flopped around. With a tight base layer with the armor in it you don't have to worry about the armor in your jacket staying in the right place!

I understand ones safety is paramount. For commuting what do you think is a practical jacket?

I would say wearing ANY armored jacket is the first step in safety. The sky is the limit with jackets. You can probably find $50 jackets on Amazon all the way up to $500 jackets from the motorcycle supply stores (Revzilla is my go to).

Then you need to determine material...do you need cold weather?..hot weather?..4 seasons? textile, mesh, leather?

I have a hot weather mesh, a warmer weather mesh, a perforated leather and a winter textile jacket.

Probably a nice textile with some venting is the most versatile, all around jacket, if you're only going to have one. Always add in a back protector as most jackets only come with a foam pad back there, not a real back protector.

You can play around on the Revzilla site by searching for textile jackets and then reading reviews and looking at pricing.

I personally have a Joe Rocket, 2 Alpinestars and an AGV Sport. Most jackets are good..just comes down to choosing the right combination of features and price.

Ok, the HWK pants and their mesh jacket line also have great reviews.

just re-read the Amazon listing..doesn't appear to have a real back protector..wording is kind of vague. If you do get the jacket and it doesn't have a true back protector be sure to buy one. Your spine is very important! (but it's still a great value, even without a true back protector)

OK, I understand that you need an inexpensive protective jacket.
I hope you will buy the most hi viz jacket and helmet you can find.

If you want all-flat-black-cool and stealthy looking* - fine, wear it to walk in the mall.

Many reports state that THE most noticeable part of a motorcyclist is that white helmet moving through traffic.
You want to be noticed, seen, out there on the streets - save the cool skulls and flames for your T-shirts worn under your hi viz riding jacket!

It's totally up to you.

We had a member here who, while wearing fairly bright colors, was nailed by a driver in a truck who didn't see him.
So, what's he do with his big insurance settlement, when he recovered from his many injuries a year later? He went out a bought a flat black NM4 Honda, with all matching flat black helmet and riding leathers.

Seeing as this is my current shirt I wear over warmth layers. You might see that cool is not my thing.

My bike has been scratched up over the years and I am considering painting it to this kymco scheme.
