New Here, New Scooter, Old Question
« on: July 16, 2008, 09:49:56 PM »
Hello all.  Jay here from Mount Hope, Ontario.  Mount Hope is just south of Hamilton.  For those unfamiliar with our area, look to the far west end of Lake Ontario and you'll find Hamilton.

Many years ago, the bride and I were in Bermuda, ripping around for a week on a scooter.  I loved it.  Since then, I always wanted to get back in the saddle, but for one reason or another I never did.  Well, I'm up again.

Just yesterday, I took possession of my new blue Vitality 50 2T.  So far it is great.  I am slightly disappointed by the full throttle restriction that does not get me over 57 km/h (35 mph).  I know I was not buying a speed demon, but I want to be somewhat competitive with the flow of traffic.  Legally, I can have a maximum of 70 km/h, so I definitely have room to grow.  I have found several online articles, videos, and sites about the ease of derestricting a scoot by removing the "spacer."  A Kymco article refers to "inserting a new spacer."  Does that not defeat the purpose of removing the spacer anyway?  Is that a misprint and the old spacer is trash?

I appreciate any insight any of you may be able to offer.  All the best!

Travis

On the way home from work tonight, I noticed that my fuel needle was on "E," so I stopped to get gas.  That was at the 130 kms mark.  I put in 3.81 litres for a total of $5.86 CDN.  3.81 litres is one gallon.  130 kms is 80 miles, ergo for the first reading I was able to get a nice 80 miles per gallon.  That is quite satisfactory in my books.  The Vitality 2T has a 5 litre tank, so i know when I hit "E," I still have a litre and a bit of wiggle room.

All the best!

Jay :D

UPDATE:  I took my scoot in today for its 300 km work over.  I spoke to the dealer about derestricting the machine.  He said, "No problem."  They just swap out the stock regulated variator bushing that has the Kymco collar for a straight bushing.  He is also going to rejet the carb.  Piece of cake.  Tomorrow, I'll be able to tell you how much this piece of cake costs me from the dealer.  Stay tuned.

UPDATE: Just back from the dealer.  The first service including the bushing derestriction and the carb rejet was $164.98 CDN (including taxes).  There is definitely more speed.  It is really windy here today, so there is no way for me to get a accurate idea of what speeds I am able to attain.  When the wind dies down, I'm going to do the GPS "calibration" thing to see where my speedometer is and what the scoot really is doing.  Until then, all the best!

UPDATE:  I decided to go out in the wind anyway, so I rigged up my Garmin Nuvi 650 and off I went.  I found that across the range of speeds my speedometer was a full 9-10 kph faster than the GPS speed.  My maximum GPS reading was 73 kph and to achieve that the speedometer was buried over the 80 kph mark.  Next upgrade: Technigas Next R Chrome exhaust.  That should get the engine breathing a little bit better and it looks sharp too, especially since the silencer is colour keyed to my blue scoot.  All the best!
