2012 Super 8 50 starter issue

Hello,

My 2012 Super 8 50 2T used to have no issues starting, but now when I press the ignition, there is no sound at all. I'm wondering where I should start in the troubleshooting process.

Fully charged battery, kickstart works. Thanks for the help!!

Sounds like a switch problem. I don't know 2 strokes but the troubleshooting for your issue should be the same as a 4. Check battery voltage, should be at-least 13volts. Check voltage at the switch, if there is none chase the wire and ensure all connections are secure.

Don't know 2 strokes ....but with key in start position and you pull brake lever....does your brake light come on?
If not, try other brake lever. Brake light now?
On 4 strokes - no brake light when levers pulled = little switch behind the brake lever has failed....prevents starting .

So I tested all the connections with a test light and was able to deduce that it was an issue with the starter button. I checked the fuses which all looked good, but thought I’d swap them around to see if that changed anything. Well, it seems to be a fuse issue! Thankfully I just bought some new ones!

UPDATE: When I hopped on the next day, of course the electric start didn’t work, but today I found out what may be causing the issue:

When I press the starter in normally, I get nothing. When I press the starter up from the bottom and in, it works. Seems like there’s a contact issue with the starter button. Any idea how to take it apart to clean the contacts? Will I need to add some more metal?

In general for disassembly, look for seams in the plastic switch body and follow the perimeter loosening all fasteners. I think there are two Philips screws in yours. I would recommend taking photos along the way for reference. Cleaning the contacts should help. Also, if they have lost their rebound they can be slightly flexed to restore the spring. Depending on the switch design last resort before replacement might be like you mentioned adding material by tinning/soldering the contact(it is not easy).

To burnish contacts I use 320 or 400 grit paper with contacts tightly squeezed together on the paper, then spray with contact cleaner to get rid of any grit. Or I use a point file if I can find it. (The last time I filed points was on my '63 Dart.)
