Impulse buying while quarantined?
« on: May 12, 2020, 12:37:02 PM »
I need to go have a closer look at the art 'prints' on  my daughter's bedroom walls!
We keep getting these auction alerts from Sotheby’s.....
(I know she saved her Xmas $ from her grandmother, but....!!)

Gotta admit, I really like the Singer Sargent. Could hang this general over my toolbox in the garage....keep me squared away when I'm working on my scooter.
And the weird little Utrillo....would fit under my seat I think.

My impulse buying during the C-19 (before stay at home order).  A 2005 kymco people 250 I bought for parts to fix my project people 250.  The guy I bought it from said he drove it home from his sons house where it was not being used and said it wouldn't start again. He put on a new coil and wire along with a new battery to no avail. Said he could not get any spark.  He had just retired and wanted his garage back for woodworking projects.

I offered him a rock bottom price that he turned down and I sweetened the pot just a little and he accepted.  I drove down to Oklahoma and picked the scooter up without making any stops there and back.

When I got home and unloaded the scooter I thought about my people 150 having trouble with the contacts on the start stop switch. I fiddled with the switch and the scooter started.
In parts 200S and Grand Vista and my motorcycles 2 CS BMW'S and one GS BMW.

Sold-32 Kymco scooters of various sizes this summer.

Impulse buying almost got me a 2006 Ninja 250R with only 3500 miles. Good thing was it sold before I could dial the number.

I've had to reign it in, it's hard impulse buying because there's so much out there at the moment!

Actually just the opposite has happened here. I don't know if it's money from the stimulus checks to people who are still working or just pent-up angst from being at home. I've seen 3 low mileage Kymco scooters go for considerable more then their book value. All three were under a thousand miles and mint condition.

Well, Sotheby's had a great day with their auction - me, not so much.
Most of the works went for well above the estimates. People were buying!!

I tried a couple of last minute bid-nips, without success.

I bid $25.50 on the Utrillo (it's 6"x8" for Pete's sake, plus he messed up the "M") it went for $27,500

And, I knew I'd have to up my game for the C. Pissarro (15"x18")
Closed my eyes and bid $109.96 ….
Somebody slipped it out from under me for $560,000 .

My 24 by 36 oil paintings are about half that good. Would they go for $250,000 then? I haven't been able to get more than $55.

Try adding a gilt frame....
It pushed the Pissarro up, I think.
(or painting on black velvet (big sellers here at gas stations! F-150 owners love them - especially the Unicorns and Elvis)

So your saying Sam Walton had a collection of Elvis and Unicorn paintings?    I guess when you reach billionaire status your tastes become eccentric instead of poor taste.

For those that didn't know he drove a 74 Ford F-150.

I have some old maps, being a retired land surveyor, what else would I collect,  my most valuable is an original 1852 railroad map of New Hampshire, also have a early 1700's numbered reprint of an old New England map. others are more recent and were limited quantity reprints at the time I got them.

but now, their value has been reduced by the ability to order reprints of about any map, online
