I first got a scooter 1 1/2 yr ago w zero interest in motorcycles. Changed my mind after a couple months for 2 reasons. Wanted more power and stability for the occasional ride on roads of 55+ mph (not interstates though), and something to share the miles with so the scooter wouldn't be worn out in 4-5 yrs, as I was riding at a pace of 12K miles/yr.
The Rebel 250 works out great functionally and size wise, and complements the scooter well. They are just different enough to provide variety, and each one makes me appreciate the other. The cost of owning both vs one is negligible (annual tag and $10 extra insurance). Split miles pretty evenly, and w the Rebel capable of 80K+ miles, the scooter should be good for 8 or so more years. Currently 11K on the scoot, 7K on the Rebel. Scoot gets 100 mpg on 93 octane, m/c 75 mpg on 87, which works out to the same ¢ per mile gas wise.
