Stig's LIKE200i acting up...
« on: June 30, 2020, 10:55:26 AM »
This is only the second time I've not trusted the way my LIKE was acting.
6 years ago it was a failed TPS - yet the scooter never left me stranded, - it just ran very rough sometimes.

6 AM this morning upon start up the engine seemed to stumble (as though I'd caught the EFI with its trousers down), "Too quick to hit the start button?"

After starting the scooter began to creep forward and stop, creep and stop.

I rode off for 15 mins, hoping things would clear itself. Scoot ran perfectly at high speed.
But every time I pulled away from a stop there was stumbling and jerking.
Turned around a rode home.

I'll listen to the engine at idle again. Rev it a bit. Listen.
Pretty certain it is not something as simple as having started it too quickly this morning - catching the EFI in mid sequence.

One guess is oil on the newish belt (one of the 2 seals leaking? But no oil showing on the belt cover), or best guess is a broken clutch spring which can cause a stall and creep. 16,000+ miles and 8 summers on this original clutch.
No codes.

Hope it's the clutch. I have a new OEM LIKE clutch & bell in the tool box.

Will report back....

Stig

Based on over 400,000 miles of rubber band drive scootering-----first thing I would do, is run engine up for 10-15 seconds, a couple times---can cure glaze---easy to do, before taking things apart.

My guess is it’s a mixture of dirty clutch pads, some pad dust trapped at the inide of the bell, and a glazed bell.

Life is a journey. Just spend some time, and enjoy the trip.

I should have said "run engine up against brakes".

Dust, glaze doesn't explain creeping forward at idle after start up....?
That is a symptom of failed clutch spring.

Okay your problem really got me puzzled. I just did a Google search and apparently it can also be caused by a stuck roller in the variator - or a stuck slider in your case I guess.
Aparantly at least one scooter manufacturer recommends that CVT systems (variators and clutches) on their scooters should be cleaned every 5000 miles. If this is applicable n other scooters, I guess this might be advisable on Kymco scooters as well.

Anyway, it will be interesting to know what is causing your problem.

Moving the next post on this to "Technical, How To" >>>> Had an adventure installing the new clutch!
Will try riding for coffee tomorrow and will report back here if it was successful.
