???  I'm confused, unless yer scooter is 2 stroke,  the belt drive in my 450i provides plenty of engine braking, even towing 1000 lbs down 18% grades
Wouldn't you need the centrifugal clutch engaged before you would have any engine braking?  As long as the engine is above the rpm to keep the centrifugal clutch engaged you should have engine braking.

Every time I come down from the top of the dam, my scoot is pretty much freewheeling at idle. If I goose the throttle only then does it jerk into drive....and would speed up too much for the full-lock hairpins here.. (think reversing course in your bedroom)
Just figured coming down an 800 foot roof it'd do the same.
No expert....admittedly.

I know on my 500's when you back off the thottle the engine performs engine breaking until the rpm drops below that of the centrifugal clutch.  Never thought about a steep hill (just not a lot of those in KS).  Used to do a lot of trail riding in Colorado mountains where you always had a gear box on my bikes. I still enjoy trail riding just not enough people to go with anymore to make it safe. 20 years ago I  would never have thought about posting on a scooter forum let alone owning one or two. ;)

I've always noticed plenty of engine braking on my scoot. In fact, I can go out for a ride and not need to touch the brakes much..other than when coming to a complete stop.

that's the way it is in my UXV450i as well, on the road. on trails, I need to use brakes on steep inclines, but not that that isn't any engine braking, just that it's not enough for the weight that I carry, probably a total GVW of 1800 lbs

Private roads up to some of the cabins in the Smokys is like 2 or 3 or 4 of these Lombard street runs, end-to-end.

I've driven San Francisco's famous  Lombard street a couple of times ….never on two wheels.
When a scooter is at idle there is no engine braking....at least not on any of mine.

In a car I was never touching the gas pedal....just riding the brake.

one of our local lakes has driveways like that. I've done several site designs. I can see where belt drive would not stay engaged. I went to get payment from a client once, on my V-strom, iirc from my survey work, 195 feet drop in a 600ft driveway, going down was not memorable, probably cause the V-strom 1000 has phenomenal engine braking, what I do remember is never getting the clutch fully engaged in 1st the whole way to the top, slipping it all the way, and leaning forward right into the tank for fear of looping it, the inclination of the driveway, nearly 30%, is like riding a wheelie.  That was the last time I rode down, I went down in my Grand Cherokee once too, brakes all the way down, and you hope they don't fade, torque converter never locking all the way up. after that, when I went to the site, it was like beginning of job before driveway was built,  park at top, walk down, during the survey itself, I hate to think of how many times up and down
