Transmission Oil

When filling the transmission oil do you fill from the bottom drain hole until oil comes out the actual fill hole?

I remember servicing the lower unit on an outboard that way. I think it will work, just not sure if it’s kosher.

That is how I have done it and with no ill effects. As long as there is sufficient oil to keep the gears bathed, and not so much as to fill your air filter, you should be fine. Also, the manual states a volume(approx. 200ml in my case) for the gearbox. You can fill it until either the spec or fill hole is reached.

There's a reason why it's called a drain and filler hole.
Drain at the drain hole, fill it through the filler hole.

I've changed all three of my 500'S transmission oil  that way without any issues.  I'm use to dealing with outboards as well.

I use a big 50 ml drugstore syringe that I can inject measured amounts of transmission oil in the filler hole. It seems to work well with minimum effort and almost no spillage.

Spec is about a pint, so that's what I put in. That's all that drained out as well. How much does it take to get up to the filler hole?

Kansas Kymco and I were discussing this in another thread...on some scoots (my S200, for sure) if you fill until it comes out the filler hole you've over filled it and the extra will get sucked into your airbox..not good.

Other scoots seem to work just fine using this method. Personally, I'd prefer to drain it and put in the correct, measured amount of oil your bike calls for. That may or may not fill it up to the fill hole.

Really scooter rear ends are not fussy---just enough oil fine.  I use drain for drain, filler for filler.

I should have mentioned that in my response.  Before you told me I didn't even realize it was vented to the air box. That's why I filled it like I do my outboards.
