I started riding a Honda 50 step through in 1966. Who knew about helmets. I stopped riding for a while, and started again in the late 70's. I wore what was probably the only major brand available at the time... a Bell. That lasted for a while until I got my first BMW. Then for years, I wore several BMW (now Schubert) full face modular helmets, but the price of Schuberts today is outrageous. I wound up wearing Shoei's for a few years, again full face, modular. Very comfortable. I'm now wearing an HJC full face modular, which I really like. Don't remember the model name off hand, but it has this slick dark visor that you can slide down the face shield if you're in bright sun. I bought this online, but I tried the helmet on at a motorcycle shop before buying it online. Did I feel guilty about doing that? Not at all since I spent a ton of money at that shop having my Beemer serviced. I also bought an Olympia jacket from the shop, so I didn't have any qualms about the helmet.
As a retired MSF instructor, I always taught my students to get the best helmet they could afford, and try it on and wear it in the shop for a good while. Like the old saying goes, if you've got a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet.
