2003 people 50 very hard to cold start
« on: October 06, 2010, 01:02:26 AM »
I just bought a 2003 people 50 with 1000 miles. Starts and runs great at 60+ degrees, gets progressively more difficult as it gets colder. Could not start at 40 degrees. I replaced the bystarter, thinking this might be the problem. No change. The previous owner cleaned the carb. could it just be out of adjustment(the carb screws)? it seems like it's just not getting enough gas when cold. I'm using 93 octane and klotz synthetic oil (it's a 2-stroke) Also changed the sparkplug. Does any one think using an irridium plug can help with cold starts? New scooter owner, would love any help. THanks!

I reckon there was a recent thread on this in the ppl section, was bad cdi connections.
ZX50, 47mm cyl. kit, TZR50 CDI. Michelin Pilot Sport tyres,
Next performance mod; pumping the tyres up.

..no 'pologies needed...

 ;)

..ethanol attacks aluminum...over extended periods of time...

..sea-foam, counter-acts that process...

..ethanol use during certain months of the year will not damage, nor significantly inhibit a scoot's performance..

Thanks for the suggestions! I sprayed some fogging oil in the carb while running, and next morning it started and ran much better and quicker. Might have had some varnish build up in the tiny secondary jet or something. As for ethanol, you can't avoid it. The EPA keeps pushing to get even more of it into our Nations fuel supply. This sucks.

I may try tweaking the carb screws just a little, in small increments. Thanks again.

Yeah, since my scoot's not running so good I had to fill up at the station about a mile from the house and they only had the 10% ethanol stuff.  :(

But I think the sea-foam stuff said on the front of the can that it's good for that, too. Might have to put some of that in since it's just sitting here anyway, huh?

well wordslinger, I spoke to soon. Took 15 min this morning. And, when I think it's warmed up some( driving 2 blocks) it will die at the stop light. I will have to get a small screwdriver and adjust that jet. I used seafoam (about 1 ounce or so) in 1 tank of gas( 2 weeks ago when I bought scoot) how often can you run it through your fuel system? And, could the stalling be caused by a problem with auto choke? There is more to the system than the bystarter I presume? Will have to load up my service maunual disk and read through carb section once more.
