The "Shroppie Fly" - explanation:  Shropshire Union Canal The Shropshire Union Canal, nicknamed ‘the Shroppie’, was completed in 1835 by Thomas Telford. This was quite late on in the canal-building era, and was during a period when canals were cut more ruthlessly through the landscape, tacking hills and contours with flights of locks – such as the 15 locks at Audlem, where you’ll find the Shroppie Fly pub. This canal-side pub used to be a warehouse, served by ‘fly’ boats that transported cargo along the ‘the Shroppie’ 24 hours a day. The pub’s bar is built in the shape of a narrowboat.

They showed the canals on Escape to the country and went into their history. They showed the narrow boats now used for recreation on the canal. Interesting they use to be pulled original with a single horse beside the canal. Thanks for sharing your pictures.

I do NOT understand this Karl.  It's fine on my phone and when I upload and when you click on it!  If anyone can tell me what I'm doing wrong, advice gratefully received.

Thanks KK, I believe that over the last decade many miles of previously abandoned, silted up overgrown canals have been reopened for leisure use.  A childhood pal of mine who has lived in Canada for 40+ years still comes over every year for a longboat holiday!
