Whining about rear tire wear!
« on: August 27, 2020, 03:02:12 PM »
6,300 miles on this 14" Maxxis. (higher priced Piaggios come with City Grips as standard)
I did 12,000 miles on a 12" City Grip and it had more tread left than this!....still had grooves all across the tire.

Getting real close to time to see how hard it is to remove a rear Liberty wheel. (at least it has a slip-on muffler and drum brake)
No City Grip avail. for the Liberty, so will be going with Pirelli Angels.

16" Front Maxxi looks barely worn....but won't be mixing tires - so it'll get an Angel, too.

The orange Kymco I just purchased has new  Maxxis tires and a new battery.

I beleive you can get city grip in your size in UK and Greese, since they are manufactured I don't understand why they don't import them to the US. I guess not a large enough market to bother with.

Not many (any other?) skinny-tired big-wheel scooters sold here.
That skinny front looks like it'd go 18,000 miles if I'd let it.
I don't have trouble with cracking or 'aging' with my tires. Maybe because of my gentle riding style, or the time of day I ride,  and - if I'm not riding - they're parked indoors.
Frankly I think folks freak unnecessarily about tires failing due to age, as I can't recall the last time anyone reported an exploded tire. (on any vehicle)
If I was pushing a big bike at a ton while playing on the interstate - I'd likely rethink my attitude 😊

As long as there is no dry rot (cracking) in the tires I don't worry so much about age. Like you all my bikes/scooters are parked inside storage.

Tom when you remove the muffler,  do it very slowly if it has a gasket if it comes apart it takes 4 weeks to get one from Piaggio,  unless your local dealer has them in stock,  for my B V 350  cost 35.00 Ea.   my local dealer has O stock !!!

Stig / Major Tom, that tire looks to be totally squared off! Do you have any curvy roads you ride on?  8)

Thanks for your concern.
I'm not much of a knee dragger - and car tire guys kinda prove that a square-ish tread is not certain death😊

I'd be happy to get 6400 miles out of a rear tire on ANY of my current bikes.  The City grip on my Like lasted 5400 miles and was more worn out than yours is.  I have Pirelli Angels on my Like now.  I doubt the rear Angel will last 6400 miles but it might come close.  It's too early to tell right now as I only have around 2500 on it.

My experience is similar to Klav's.  Not in terms of riding--not even close--but rear tire mileage.
5700 on a Duro and 6000 on a Conti-Scoot. And I'm just 150 lbs.  We'll see how the current Power Pure fairs.
12,000 on a City Grip rear (or any make) with a 250 lb rider is quite impressive.
2014 BV 350  "IndiGO" (fast, strong and tireless)
2006 Honda Rebel 250  "Snow Leopard" (stealthy, agile and durable)
2018 Lance Cali Classic 200i  "Black Panther" (smooth, nimble, quiet and quick)
2016 Wolf V-50 (sold)

Wanted a Kymco, ended up w a Lance, but that forum is inactive, so I am here

Never bought a used scooter that hadn't had the tires replaced before 10k miles.  John G ought to be expert on tires with all the miles he rides.

6K on a rear?  Seems perfectly acceptable to me Stig.  Think 4K's all I got on my lightweight PCX and I doubt the X-Town Kenda will get more than 4 - and that's if I leave it to wear out, which I doubt!
Regards & ride safe,

Yeah...so I  keep reading.
Got spoiled by Michelins....been rolling on at least two of them for decades😊
Soon as it cools down in the garage - I'll go tackle that rear wheel. It'll be slow going with several unexpected problems if my mechanical history is any indicator.

I got 20000km out of my City Grips. Still have them somewhere in the garage. I'll take a picture of them tomorrow.

The ones that are on the scoot now have 13000+km.

I have a friend with a Vespa 250 GTV.  He wore out a rear city grip in around 2500 miles.  He is going to try a Pirelli Angel next.  He already put a Pirelli on the front.  I don't thin he got 5K out of the City Grip on the front.

Why did they wear out so fast?

That's what happens when you spend a lot of time on roads like these:

.

At least the tires don't get squared off.
