An interesting issue.
« on: August 28, 2020, 11:47:33 PM »
I have experience an interesting issue with starting my Myroad 700i and I wonder if anyone has had the same experience.

5 times now my Myroad has turned over but either fired only one cylinder intermittently or neither of the cylinders.  It will not start and no the kick stand is not down.

I now know when it is going to happen now because the RPM goes to 5K when I crank. Otherwise before I saw that it let me run the battery down and not start.

Now, when I wait an hour, it starts right up even when it sounded like I ran the battery down dead with a solenoid buzzing sound signaling a dead battery to me.

* The Battery is OEM so it can and may be replaced but it's really low mileage so I have not seen it as a direct concern especially when the scooter starts right up after it seems to have run down.

I am ready to take it in and fix whatever but I thought to ask first.
It sounds like an electrical issue to me.

Efi scoots seem to like a really healthy battery....and clean battery and grounding terminals.

Stig is correct in that EFI bikes and scooter's require a very strong battery. The battery has to spin the engine while providing voltage to the ignition and powering the electric driven injectors to delever fuel. If there is not sufficient voltage the injectors won't open to deliver fuel.

The no fuel possibility makes sense. Replacing the OEM battery makes sense too.  So the logical then is to take that step and replace the battery.  I can do that. Okay.  Let me see how that works out.
Why the RPM hits 5k when it doesn't normally move at all until it starts is confusing but low voltage might be the cause.

As Stig said make sure the battery terminals are clean as well.

Sounds like it may be an additional problem , especially since it usually starts later even with a low battery. But I agree that replacing the battery may be a good starting point. Then perhaps a relay or something may be sticking.

I can vouch for actual testing on the DT300i but anything less than 10.5 volts while cranking is suspect and 9.5 or less is a no start. It will turn over but not fire. Kymco ECU very similar on several models we have had so the conclusion is that 9.5 volts for most all models.

I have my eye on it.
Today I had to "give it some gas" to get it to start after it was parked at the store.
I agree that there may be more than one issue.
I can't see how the RPM gauge zooms to 5000 trying to crank at times except for some electrical issue.
I'll have money for a new battery shortly.

I now have a new battery here.
It is on charger right now.
I bought a "jump start" unit and when I anticipated the scooter wouldn't start easy I used it.  Also used it when unexpectedly I needed to use it.
Today I was riding to the local Walmart when the scooter lost power as if it ran out of gas.
I stopped and jumped it. It started and ran a short time and once again stopped running like it was out of gas.
There is half a tank.
I called for a tow.
Like before after it sat for 30 to 40 minutes it started up. Now it seems to run for a little while and then dies like it is out of gas.

My plan  here is to change oil and filter, order and change fuel filter and also swap in the new battery.
The things that come to mind are low oil pressure, blocked fuel flow and worn out battery.

Any other suggestions?  I thought to ask.

EDIT:

I have changed the battery. It is the Banshee 14BS
That is the same size as the 12AH OEM but 2 more Amp Hours.
Perky thing.
Don't think you can get anything bigger in the battery hole because you can't.
I had to shoehorn it into the battery hole. The trick was a tuna can lid to lift up the plastic lip.

Okay I see that the scooter runs until the gas flow stops. It started this today. It will travel about 1/4 mile.
The CELP (check engine) light comes on and the manual says this is a Fuel injection system issue.
That would explain the original issue of why it sometimes doesn't start and now explains why it shuts the fuel off after a few minutes running and lights up the check engine light. It will start after 30 - 40 minutes after that.

I welcome input but think this scooter needs to have some shop time.

It's going into the shop. The Shop is 100 miles away. I am all alone with my Kymco in the Central Valley California. It appears that it may be the fuel pump/ fuel injection system.
Things are very backed up for the one Dealership I know can do the right job.  I trust that Man. I am in queue. It Goes in on October 8th and I get it back who knows when if parts are needed to be ordered
.
It's a 100 mile Tow and thankfully AAA is there to help. Seriously AAA is a hella value. I joined today. I also have 100 mile towing on my Progressive insurance but when ya think about it $120 vrs $800 cash out of pocket... AAA wins,

So the problem with it not starting at times has something to do with fuel pressure and the pump maybe? The ethanol in the gas could have caused some problems.  I just do not know.  I would think with less then 3k miles on it this wouldn't happen.

It is over my head when it needs a computer readout. I guess I'll have an update closer to November.
Maybe this will help someone else.

It may be the relay that powers the injector. Had an injector code last year on the Downtown but the injector tested good with the ohm meter. Volt test proved the relay was NOT getting power. The relay was replaced and the intermittant start and run problem went away.

Your tach going to 5k is a puzzle, though. That usually is associated with a bad connection at the battery or the system bus connection at the start relay.

Are you taking it to Kelinda's in Santa Cruz/Scotts Valley area?

I have not seen that 5k tach lately so I can't say it happens all the time; now.   Did see it but not lately. You may have the right diagnosis on that.  I don't know. Positive terminal looked a little corroded. Not much but it still had a little to clean.
The solid problem now is it simply quits running shortly after the warm up or one quarter mile of riding.  I let it warm up so the Temperature gauge hits the middle.
The wait 20 minutes and it will start like nothing has been wrong is a constant.  That has been a common issue.  The running out of gas thing is new.
I'm good with letting the shop take a look. Naturally I ask here because if something needs repair I can't describe or identify correctly then it could mean two trips to the shop.  That would suck.
I value what you all have to say.

I really do value asking for advice here.  So if my ignorance offends it is not my intent. I simply want to be as informed as possible to get the best repairs as possible.
The Myroad 700i is a fantastic scooter.  I feel good knowing I am just a throttle twist away from passing cars.

I don't know them at all.
Also I will wait to mention the name or comment on service until I have something to report.
No offense intended.  I am simply impressed with the conversations so far.
I will say something later. I hope it will be a glowing endorsement.  Kymco Places are so few and far between in my neck of the woods.

My first time https://www.kymcoforum.com/index.php?topic=24687.0 and second time https://www.kymcoforum.com/index.php?topic=27274.0 .

Two issues have been experienced by me and others. The stator going bad (not charging runs the battery down until the bike shuts off but may restart later after the battery comes back up) and the crank sensor that I had to replace twice. Start the bike and let it run until it dies, pull the crank sensor out, dip it in cold water, wipe it off and put it back in. If it restarts immediately then likely that is your problem. If not check the charging voltage.
