I think my 500 idles a hair too slow, not far from killing out (IMO). Does the throttle have any adjustment or is it not to be messed with like a lot of FI engines?

check the rubber air hoses may be clogged or leaking air ,. or   you could find a dealer with a diagnostic tool and a Meck.,  with a computer to adjust the throttle

What rpm does the tacho show Wymple?

Fully warmed up it tops out about 700, as low as 500 for awhile.

Yes that is too low - about half what it should be.

You could try resetting the TPS and Idle Speed Controller. The ISC has a motor inside, which controls the air bypass valve to obtain a smooth idling speed. The ECU may record the incorrect ISC position when the engine is running for a number of reasons. It can cause the engine to stop, be hard to start or rough idling.

The procedure for doing so is as follows:

1. Put the side stand up and engine stop switch is at “RUN”.

2. Turn the key to the “OFF” position.

3. Fully open the throttle.

4. Turn the key to the “ON” position.

5. Release the throttle after waiting for eight seconds.

6. Turn the key to the “OFF” position.

7. Turn the key to the “ON” position.

8. TPS and ISC have been reset successfully.

If the procedure fails, repeat the steps from 1 to 8.

Might be worth a shot.

Well, that worked! I picked up a good 5-600 rpm! Much nicer now.

Excellent!  Glad to have been of help. The book idle speed is 1400rpm but frankly that sounds far too high to my ear. Mine ticks over at around 1100rpm which sounds about right to me (which is fortunate!!). So if yours is in the same parish it’s all good.

Mine is now idling round 1000-1100 rpm now, cold or hot.

A bit of an update. Since resetting the idle my cold start problem is gone! I don't know if it's because my earlier efforts on cold starting cured it or the idle speed fix did. But it starts right up now without the throttle twist trick.

The idle speed fix resets the throttle body. It clearly wasn’t opening far enough on tickover so it will have reset the baseline throttle position too. I suspect that by opening the throttle fully before switching on, you effectively would have physically moved the throttle into a position where it was open sufficiently.

It would be difficult to explain how much I like this thing. The bigger bikes aren't getting much action.

I’m much the same. I used to ride my bigger bikes through necessity rather than for fun but I’m out for a ride on my scoot most evenings purely for pleasure.
