Victorian Legacy
« on: September 18, 2020, 01:16:57 PM »
This is an old Victorian pumping station near me which lay disused for may years until being bought up a few years back and developed into a nice (and very unusual) apartment block.  It just happens also to be located on a popular biking road and right on a tasty near-right angle bend!

Cool!
I was expecting to see a vintage BP or SHELL "station" with old gas "pumps"!
...so, I was very impressed -- 'till I figured it out....

I deliberately omitted to mention what was pumped... as I don't know if it would have been water or sewage!

I would be curious as to what the apartments go for when compleated? Looks like it was a steam powered pumping station by the stack.

Me too KK, iconic building; so glad they didn’t bulldoze it in the end!

Guessing you’re right about it being steam driven back in the day. As for asking prices (the apts are already occupied), google tells me around the £250K mark for 3 bedroom ones?  That’s in the grey modern section, can’t find any info on the main building so maybe it’s listed and can’t be converted?

My understanding is it's in a state of extreme disrepair.  There were plans on making apartments out of it but financing fell through. Haven't read up on it in a few years maybe things have changed. Years ago Triumph Motorcycles used it as a backdrop in their advertising.

I love old architecture. On my Romeo rides you see some old buildings in these small towns.

You mentioned old gas stations in Cloquet  Minnesota is the only Frank Lloyd Wright designed gas station.

Seems it’s moved on from that situation KK. The whole area redeveloped to incorporate the power station structure?

Yeah, but don't stop there for gas if it's raining.

We've a FLW house in our little burg. Elderly ladies spent a bundle bringing it back after it sat, chopped into ugly apartments, for years.
