2013 Kymco UXV 5001 turning off rear differential is it always on?
« on: September 26, 2020, 11:59:00 AM »
I thought I posted on this but do not see the thread.

When I make turns in L gear it seems both rear wheels are turning.   I see differential lock switch on the console to be used when in 4WD mode.   Is there a way to have just one rear wheel turn while driving so I can turn more easily?  Any suggestions please advise.

The way mine works is 2WD the rear wheels move the machine like a front engine-rear wheel drive car. 4WD all four wheels propel but front and rear differentials are open (functioning as differentials). 4WD LOCKED all wheels drive but both differentials are locked (functioning as simple right angle drives). Additionally, mine has one rotary switch on the dash board wher yours apparently has two switches, one for 2WD and 4WD, and a separate switch for LOCK/UNLOCK. same set-up just different switchology.

No, you have to rewire to do what you seemed to ask.

Thanks for the followup.

I am a third owner of my UVX 500i.   It only has total of 260 hours but it was left outside and not cared for.   Engine is strong but the shifter has always been an issue.  I just went ahead and ordered a new shifter arm assembly.  It's an adventure if I shift to Park on this machine.

Overall, I can't complain because I got this at a very affordable price.  Overall, I like it but I get anal and want everything to work.  I'm making progress.  :-)

the shifter gets better with use. Mine has way more hours than yours and the shifter is way better than when new with 15 hours demo on it!

You would have to switch the rear end diff to the UXV500 Turf model diff. Although, the Diff on the Turf model will not fit in the frame on the standard UXV500, the mounting points are different as the Diff is larger with an extra set of spider gears in it. Also, the wiring is different as is the dash switch.
On the standard UXV's, the rear diff is locked at all times, when switched to 4WD it engages the front in limited slip mode, basically
3-1/2 wheel drive, then when switched to lock diff it locks up the front and you have all 4 turning at the same time.
The project to switch to turf mode diff would not be cost effective IMO
