valve clearance question

Hello all,

So I have a question.....

I have been working with gy6 engines for about six months now and mostly all  require 0.04 intake clearance and 0.05 clearance for exhaust. However, I have stumbled upon an issue. According to the service manual for my Kymco 125 it states that the valves are to be set at 0.12 Should I follow the service manual or keep them at 0.04 for intake and 0.05 for exhaust. when I first purchased the bike both were set at 0.04 and 0.05.

Im asking this question because I followed the service manual and adjusted the valves to 0.12 and I am now hearing an Audible ticking sound. Other than the sound the bike starts and runs fine.

Just curious on everyone's opinion.

.12mm is the correct setting.
.04 or .05mm is too small - it would require valve clearance checks too often. Such a small gap clearance hardly leave any room for a mistake during valve clearance adjustments. I would never advice anyone without proper knowledge or experience to use such small clearances.

just posted this to your other post....  .004 inches / .005 inches   or .12 mm

it seems the .004 inches gets mixed up and turned into .04 mm and yes, Kymco does publish some conflicting and confusing info.

I had the same issue with my agility manual. listed spec as .004 inches which is not the same as .04mm which is also listed. The seat box placard indicates .12mm +- .02mm. Same as .004-.006 inches.

Maybe relevant > I actually received a reply from a tech at the official USA Piaggio office in Manhattan, NYC.
Manual said one thing, underseat sticker said something else for valve adj. specs.
He said the sticker supplied with the scooter is always the latest , and most accurate information. "That is its purpose. "
Makes sense to me.

.004" intake and exhaust works for nearly all kymco models. I had that .12 mm on a Like 200i and got tired fiddling two feelers to get .0045" and went to .004" for several years until trading to the People GTi 300 for my wife to ride. It and the DT300i and the Yager 200i are .004" in and out.

the sticker on the bucket of my seat reads 0.1mm to 0.02mm.

tomorrow I think I will try to adjust the valves to 0.04mm and 0.05mm like It was before and see if the ticking stops.

There is an age old debate on whether you should fill tires to the correct PSI on the sticker or the correct PSI that is on the tire.

I will buy .1 mm but not "to .02 mm" because that makes no sense. Not arguing with what you see on your sticker but suspect just another Kymco error. Use .1 mm (.004") in and out and you will be okay.

The psi on the tire sidewall is the MAXIMIM pressure.

No,no - figure listed on the tire is the "do not inflate beyond this number!"
That psi would make everybody riding on rockhard tires.
Your tire dealer will verify this.
Consider...that tire does not know what car/scooter it is fitted on.

Just occurred to me, is it possible the valve clearance ACTUALLY SAID: .1 mm +/- .02 mm?
Plus or minus .02 mm...? Now, that would make some sense to me!

It is a plus minus .02mm as indicated on my seat placard and that is the standard tune able deviation used by kymco on the agility and several other models.

TBR125 you are correct I typed it in wrong.

I believe I solved the problem. I adjusted the valves to .004 and .005 and it quieted them down. My guess is the tapping was due to too much valve lash, I wonder why the kymco service manual recommended something different than the specs listed on the sticker

Many, many errors since day one. Machines are about as right as right can be. Books, not so much. Maybe the Captain of the mothership put his only three dummies in the book department so they would do the least harm. Probably figured A. Nobody reads the things anyway, B. Most will be able to figure the right stuff without guidance.
