Where do I start
« on: November 12, 2020, 09:05:11 AM »
Hi all, newbie here. I have a stock 50cc Yup 50 and want to increase its power, where is the best place to start? Unresricted CDI, variator,  big bore kit, so much info and variations on line, its just confused me. We want to use the scooter for short trips (approx 11 kms) and it would be good to keep speed with traffic (up to 70 km or more). If I can't get this on the 50....then its gone! Thanks fine scooter friends!

For 2-up riding in traffic - you'll be a lot happier on something like an Agility125. Comes right out of the box perfectly capable of doing what you need!
No modifications to suspension, engine or brakes needed to safely carry 2 people at 70+KPH.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

Have to agree with the others 50cc is just a very small motor for one  person let alone two up riding.  No replacement for displacement so would start with a bigger scooter.  A 50cc motor only has around 3 hp and not much torque  even if you were able to achieve a 50% increase in power it would only be 1.5 HP increase  and still less then half the power of a 150cc or a 163cc (called a 200) .

In parts 200S and Grand Vista and my motorcycles 2 CS BMW'S and one GS BMW.

Sold-32 Kymco scooters of various sizes this summer.

I would imagine you'll need a pipe, carb mods, CVT tuning and maybe a BBK to get 42 mph riding solo.  So...quite a bit of money and a lot of time dialing in all this stuff.

I will assume your scoot is de-restricted.  Generally, installing an expansion chamber pipe and tuning the CVT with rollers and springs will get you the speed you need.  A pipe is the first step in getting more power from the 2 stroke engine.

Depending on what country you are in, and the year of your scoot you may have some other restrictions, such as the CDI.

Based on over 400,000 miles with modern maxi scooters and maybe another 100,000 with 2 stroke Vespas....you need at least 250cc to even hope to move with traffic in N. America.    Japan even has special rules/lanes/speed limits for 50 cc.  50 fine ridden at bicycle speeds.   I also know Kreidler in Germany made some 50's that were Autobahn legal.....and fast.   Are not 50's considered the "DUI" machine here?  No license/no insurance?

In Canada no such thing as no licence and no insurance, and if you go over 32 Km.s with a electric scooter you get a ticket, if you get caught, thank goodness they dont look to hard at scooters here,

Absolutely agree with the majority here, get at least a 125 scooter. You will be happier in the long run with the performance. Riding 2up puts a tremendous strain on a 50cc and will cause early demise of the engine. Unless you enjoy the "thrill" of tuning for speed get a larger scooter.  ;)

Absolutely agree BB. After 3 years on a 125 I ditched it for a 300 for the extra torque and 10mph top end. Over here in the UK arterial routes need 60mph with some in reserve. Can’t do that reliably with a 125, never mind a 50!

Add a 0 to your 50, speed is not a problem.
