Unrealistic expectations
« on: November 21, 2020, 10:22:07 AM »
I notice when some people are selling a used Kymco they price a  several year old scooter close to new retail.  Case in point a 2012 Super 8 listed for $1950. when NADA shows $785-$1070.  with the caption (must sell by mid December moving out of state).   You can purchase a new Super 8 for around $2200.

I understand asking a premium for a clean low mileage scooter  but some people are unrealistic.  I understand why people purchase new to get a warranty  and a problem free scooter along with advancements such as ABS and FI.

Then I remembered Stig making a offer on a clean low mileage scooter that a Dealer sat on until  devaluation  reduced it even more.

As a hobby since retired I scan the ad's for exceptional good deals (usually not running) repair and resell so I see this phenomenon.

On that basis, my X-Town should now be worth more than I paid for it! [emoji23]

Actual New scoot prices vs used might be much further appart than first appearance. ....
When daydreaming about owning another Honda Forza I always look for sales from private owners. The dealer new price is not even close to what I'd pay to get it from showroom floor to the street.
I have a scooter which cost me 38% more than "sticker" to move it from 'floor' to 'street'.

Stig I understand that sales tax is added and dealer title fee but I look for out the door pricing. In Kansas I have to pay tax on used scooters as well.   I've never encountered anywhere near 38% on new machines,  9.25 sales tax and $195. title fee.   Some dealers advertise out the door price with only sales tax added.

Yesterday I went to lunch in Lindsborg and purchased a super clean low mileage (2400 miles) 2013 Kymco Super 8 150.  I use NADA as a guideline  low retail was $830 to average retail $1120.   The person advertised it for $1300.  I took 100 dollar bills and offered  $900. which he countered with $1k. Stuck firm to $900. and was on my way with the scooter loaded in the truck in 20 minutes. Most of that time was filling out the paper work and loading in the truck.  To tag the Super 8 was $133.75  plus $7.27 (monthly) for full coverage insurance   $250 deductible.

Was the scooter worth  $1300. absolutely  according to Kelly Blue book.  By the way the Mexican food was delicious.

If I find a super clean low mileage Forza in my searches I will send you a private message.

I'm guessing the '38%' upcharge to get it out the door was a combination of real fees and 'dealer fees'...dealer prep, setup, PDI, unboxing, showroom dusting, etc.

I've never encountered fees that high and I've bought about a dozen new machines over the years.  The absolute highest was a $195.  dealer fee on top of the selling price.  Sales tax has to be paid on New or Used machines regardless of dealer or private individual.

Most owners who want high prices for older/used scooters, never rode them much,   on 11th new Maxiscooter since 1990----I try to ride them out to 50,000 miles and of course expect some (big) loss....but I got  my value out of them by riding!  Right now in US with new scooter not selling, used scooter prices should be low.

John your spot on in  (never rode them much).   The dealer I use sold out of scooters this year way early this year. When the $1200. stimulus check arrived the scooters were cleaned out.   In fact the dealer just got in some   replacement inventory.  Found a 2012 Super 8 in Kansas City with only 684 miles on it. Never could get in contact with the seller.  Owner of Dan's Cycle said very common for people to purchase a new machine and ride it for a short time then park it in the garage.

I had no idea these scooters would run for as many miles as they do.  I purchased a People 250 for parts for $200. It shows 65,000 kilometers on the odometer.   Imagine my surprise when I got it home and found it started and drove.

I have only sold one scooter.  My Super 8 150 had over 33,000 miles on it.  The tires were worn out and the belt and rollers due for a change.  I got my money's worth out of that scooter.  I sold it for 60 bucks.  It was running well but it would take some money to replace the tires and belt.

I had a couple of scooters like that in my early 20s. In particular, a Lexmoto Gladiator that I bought for £180 with nearly 40,000 miles on the clock.

I had another 5000 good miles out of that before the cam chain went PING.

30 year old me would have patched it up, but 23 year old me didn't know how at that point. Shame, as it would have been a £30 repair.

The guy still has it advertised, but he did lower the price to $1770.  Something tells me he will have it for a while longer. ::)
