What did you fix / upgrade / replace on your scooter this year?
« on: November 30, 2020, 03:56:22 AM »
As we're approaching the end of the year (and the end of most of our riding seasons, with the exception of Scooterfan in the Southern Hemisphere!) I started thinking back on what I fixed or upgraded on my scoot this year to improve things:

1. went to all LED turn signals
2.sanded clutch pads and bell to eliminate a bad clutch chatter
3.replaced rear brake shoes to eliminate a rear brake pulsation
4.replaced pilot jet in carb
5. replaced fork oil to fix a very poor ride / jackhammer feeling in the bars

How about you guys? Any nice fixes, changes or improvements this year?

This was a year of tires. Two sets of Pirelli angels, three sets of Michelin City Grip's and one set of Shinko's. Four AGM batteries. Two fuel pumps.  6 oil and filter changes along with gear oil and iridium spark plugs. Flushed the brake fluid in 2 scooters.  Four seats recovered. Four  touring windscreens. And a partridge in a pear tree.

In all fairness I had all the tires changed at my local dealer.  I also used a upholstery shop for the seat covers.

2012 LIKE200iLX, 17,500 miles:

new OEM Kymco Clutch
new OEM Kymco belt*
new 14gm Dr Pulley slider weights*
new Michelin City Grip on the front

2020 was an unusual year for the LIKE, new parts wise. The scooter has not needed any new parts for a few years - just oil changes and valve checks.
* only replaced belt & Dr P's because I was in the CVT for clutch replacement.

Since l got my LIKE late this year l had to refurbish a little bit more than others.
1) front and rear tyre change with bearing
2) front and rear brake discs with pads
3) brake fluid change
4) led running lights
5) voltmeter
6) battery-charge socket
7) 2x oilchange + magnet in this big plug
8) gear oilchange
9) bigger (heavier handle weights)
10) front shocks refill
11) airfilter change
12) new Lithium Ione battery
and for l am kind of superstitious, restyling with red parts is not listet numeric after 12.
14) a flatter seat, to allow me to move my rear end further back when riding solo.

This is about all l did and l have to say it's great to work on this scoot and it's even better to have this forum around.

So far this year on my J300 (Downtown 300) I've done....

5 x oil and filter changes
1 x new drive belt
1 x light sand and deglaze of clutch pads
1 x spark plug replacement
1 x Pirelli Angle front tyre
1x new battery
1 x front break pad replacement
1 x (very rough) seat modification
Swapped out the rollers for 15gram sliders
2 x replacement break reservoir caps (purely for aesthetic reasons)
2 x replacement tyre valve caps (purely for aesthetic reasons)

Ran a fused 12 gauge wire to the phone charger socket...and up front, too. Now I can use the phone socket for my air pump and also charge the battery via the socket. Also installed a relay and a pair of very loud horns (from ebay) up front, replacing the wimpy stock horn.

My 2019 XTown 300i this year, 11,000 total miles, maybe 5,000 this year.   I did:

#1 put Heidenau matched set of tires just recently---changed bike from foul handling pig to nice riding/ ok handling scooter!!

#2 Monkeyed with top boxes---E-46 Givi does have bad effect on handling in some situations, smaller Bestem box, which is narrower, works better. Load is 8 and half pound dog--Moose.

#3  Windshield---after 11 new maxi scooters and 400,000 miles with them I am convinced there is no windshield solution---your nose being too far from tip of shield----Used Puig touring screen, cut 4 inched Laminar Lip added=maybe ok?   Right now stock shield, with Laminar Lip set about one half inch from tip of shield = work ok----shoulders not too well protected, speed needs to be held 60 mph and under.   Laminar Lip in my book needs to be drilled and bolted on.   Lost one in Minneapolis rush hour using  their stick- on arrangement!

I think new US Market People 150S Shield, trimmed so you can see over might/should provide buffet free ride, Vespa style.  May buy one.

How many miles ridden this year?
Stig

I do around 2k every month commuting to and from work. I've done 20,000 km so far this year (8 weeks or so of working from home due to lockdowns means I'll do a few less km's than otherwise). I do the oil and filter every 4k. The manual says every 5k, but it's cheap and easy so I do it every second month.

I also forgot to add to my list, I had to replace both front headlight bulbs. They both blew separately about 4 weeks apart. It seems there's a definite end of life for this things!

On another note, one of the best / most convenient modifications I made to the bike was removing the side stand kill switch. 95% of the time I use the kick stand and I like to be able to start the bike and let it warm up for a minute or so while I put on my helmet and gloves etc. I could never do that with the kill switch active. I also removed the gas strut that holds the seat up. With that removed I can open the seat all the way and it rests against the handlebars (assuming you don't have them on an angle with wheel lock engaged) giving much easier access to the entire under seat area.

I've rebuilt a Honda Melody moped from scratch this year; combination of boredom and some pointless desire to prove that I could do it. Lot of painting and a lot of replacing duff 40 year old parts.

Honda Spree, for those of you over the big pond.
Rides;

Suzuki GW250 Inazuma (2016)
Honda C70C (red, 1983)

As previously posted, all I have needed to do on my new X-Town 300i this year was to replace the OEM Kenda tyres which were frankly sh!te.  I opted for Michelin City Grip 2's and it's the best £100 I have spent as they absolutely transformed the handling of this scooter.
Regards & ride safe,
Neil
