2021 Lineup Includes the People S150
« on: January 07, 2021, 05:24:48 AM »
First big wheel scoot from Kymco in a couple years.
Aimed squarely at the Liberty.

Stig if when things loosen up a bit you get a chance to compare 'em I'd love to hear whatcha got to say.

I would say your correct about it being marketed against the Liberty.  It should be a good scooter with FI and large tires. Wonder if anyone on the forum  has purchased one ?
In parts 200S and Grand Vista and my motorcycles 2 CS BMW'S and one GS BMW.

If I were to purchase a new scooter (fat chance) the People 150 would be it. I like the styling as well as the large tires. The 550 AK is a good scooter but my Xicting 500 will do everything I need.   I on the other hand prefer a tall windscreen at highway speeds.

John, let us know what you find. It would be a pleasant surprise to find a dealer stocking a brand new Kymco model. My Kymco dealer (also full line motorcycle dealer) hasn't had a Kymco scoot for quite a while.

Looking thru windshield does not safely work....in rain/snow/sleet/fog/riding into headlites in the opposite lane, etc.

My Kymco dealer only carries the 50cc line of scooters but will order in anything you want. UTV'S are his biggest seller with the majority over 20k

No kymco UTV'S

Went to Dalton GA Kymco dealer----no People 150S yet or 2021 Spade---this dealer does good job with  Kymco both in sales and parts.   40 degree dull day----should have worn Darien Jacket & Pants.   Ride was cooler than I expected.

Two Kymco 550's were on floor.   Factory heated grips look nice.   Was shown the electronic dash and features.  Pretty fancy.

I've ridden a couple of Kymco's other than my wife's Vitality 50 2T.

Is the People as good as they say? I think it's gotten a little bit better looking in the last few years, at least.

I may have to head up to the "scoot shop" soon to see, I guess.

Nuff said.

The big difference is that the Liberty is well-supported by the Piaggio dealer network.  Kymcos have almost zero dealer support in most regions.  This is important with fuel-injected machines that may require dealer diagnostics and service.  These days, if your scoot won't start, you have to truck it to your dealer.  With Kymcos, your dealer could be 500 miles way!

I guess it would be the opposite here. I have 3 Kymco dealers in a 30 mile radius of the house. Wichita 47 miles away just got a Piaggio/Vespa dealer recently.  Before that Kansas City was the closest dealer 3 hours away.

I just recently purchased a Piaggio Fly  and very impressed with the quality.  I have a large collection of FI Kymco's and none (knock on wood) have had FI issues with  one that I fixed that required a fuel pump that had set literally for years.  I've purchased carbureted Kymco's that have set for years that I have had to clean or replace the carburetor.

My thoughts ,as a Piaggio Liberty150i "S"- ABS owner.......on the new 2021 People 150S ABS.

I purchased my 2018 Liberty in the summer of 2017 from a Vespa dealer 33 miles distant. After helping to unbox it and test sit it for 'fit' - I wrote a check. (proceeds from sale of newish Burgman 400)

I have a KYMCO dealer 4 miles away, but it may be some time before he has one of the 2021 People's to see - and they never permit test rides.

The People has one more rear shock than the Liberty.
People has rear disc vs drum brake on the Liberty.
People has 4 valves, vs 3 on the Liberty.
The Liberty shares it's i-Get engine with various Vespas.
Both have front ABS only, air-cooled EFI engines and 16/14 wheels.
The People's w/b is about 2" longer, weight is a bit more - as is the HP and torque.
Liberty will cruise happily at 50>55MPH (60 if you're little dude)
People has LED headlight & tail light. Liberty has front LED DRL's, 55/60W Halogen headlight and LED tail light.
The People's dash has more stuff on it....I mean - nice information.
Both have 2 yr warranty....and permit self-servicing w/documentation in USA.
Both are fitted with less-than-best tires. (Vespas get City Grips or Angels)
People S 150 as shown is $3499, the "S" model Liberty 150 is $3099.
The Liberty is manufactured in Vietnam, the People is probably built in China.
The People seems to have more muscular/beefy lines to it (see the grip and headset panels area), and seems lacking in styling details.

It it is easy for me to see which scooter comes from an Italian company.

I love the flat seat on the Liberty - I can move forwards and back while riding!
Seat has an electric button opener - with a manual back-up lever in the locked glove box.

Kymco has sold a lot of People scooters world-wide, since @ 2009.
Piaggio boasts sales of @ 1,000,000 bigwheel Liberty's.

Most big cities have a Vespa dealer.
Many smaller cities have Kymco dealers.
Research your part of the country.....

Mechanical Liberty parts are readily available from at least two major USA web dealers....hope never to discover panels
availability. An official Liberty serv. manual is $8.

I paid $100 more for my "S" model Liberty - which included special color mirrors & exhaust shield, red seat stitching, machined black wheels and a couple of emblems.

Paint and panel fit and over-all finish look perfect to me.
Everything does what it is supposed to do - in all temps and weather since 2017.
Ease of routine service (including valves) is most important to me - and the Liberty is nearly as easy as is my LIKE.
Cons: toss the plastic gas cap for a billet one from ebay ($12) - and some of the bigger fasteners are  t i g h t !

Hard to believe I'm finishing my 4th year with this Liberty.
Only regret is that I don't own a white one, too.

I was going to comment that it appears that Kymco never changes their fork design and must share the same forks across multiple different scooter platforms (as the new Like 150's forks look identical to my 10 year old S200).

But after reading Stig's well written comparison of the 2 scoots...wow...I'll just keep my comments to myself!   8)

We would be interested in your opinion as well.  I would interested in the ergonomics of both bikes as well.  Would have to have the vin to determine where each was manufacturered .
