dummy indicators converted to led..finally
« on: March 04, 2021, 10:59:00 PM »
I've posted here a few times asking about ways to get my US market dummy indicators on my S200 to function. In the US they are without bulb or wiring. For the life of me I couldn't see an easy way to light them up. That's because they're not designed to have a bulb added. The 'rest of the civilized world' version has the led bulbs built into the indicators. The front and rear cover are separate pieces, the led strip is layed in and the covers and then permanently pressed together. If they burn out you replace the entire indicator, not just the bulb.

Over the Christmas Holiday I got the great idea to check Ebay UK for some used led indicators. I found some for about $38 (US dollars) with another $40 for shipping. Then I went to Amazon and bought 25' of 16 guage red and black wire, waterproof 2 wire connectors, inline fuse, crimp on heat shrink butt connectors, some spade connectors and a terminal block to attach everything to. I also picked up a nice ratcheting crimping tool for heat shrink connectors. Maybe another $75 in it?

I needed switched power so I used the one for my underseat power socket (that I have never used). I cut off the power socket and connected an inline fuse and the wiring to it. I ran the wiring under the floor along with the existing throttle, seat and brake cables. These were fed up the steering stem and my new wires were run into the area behind my front cover, where most of my other electronics are.

I wasn't sure how to connect everything so I read about using a terminal block. I ran the power and ground to the block and then ran both of my new led indicators to the block. I connected waterproof connectors to each led's wiring so I can disconnect them when I remove the front cover.

Took the scoot out on its maiden voyage today with the new 'always on indicators'. Nice 14 mile ride on a sunny 39 degree (F) day. I love the look and it should make me more visible to traffic. I can't wait to see how it looks at night..even though I don't really ride at night!

Very nice job! The DT300i has "bubs", sockets and wiring! The "bubs" are factory burned out so the glass envelope is all silvery. You have provided incentive to include these lights as a side project to the seat latch cable repair job!

I think the "Triple" DRL's (center headlight with two flanking smaller lights) gives a very clear signal to drivers that a motorcycle is approaching.
Even my son's Honda CB500X lit the turn pods full time as DRLs for the Triple effect.
Noce job!

thanks for the nice words...I've been thinking about doing this for a few years, glad I finally did it. While I was very happy with my work, my wife and daughters didn't seem too impressed!

Weather in the 60's is coming next week here in Iowa. That means even better weather in other parts of the US...riding weather is back!!
