How many people on this forum have you met in person?
« on: March 28, 2021, 03:39:19 PM »
I know that many people get on forums and just interact with each other online.  I was just wondering how many people have have actually met other forum members in person?

Me? I have met at least four of the members here in person.

Crossbolt
Dan V
RDhood
Cleanerman

I met Crossbolt through this forum.  The other three I met through other forums but they happen to be members here as well.

It is kind of cool when I see someone post something and I actually know that person.  They are not just some anonymous name on the internet.

Unfortunately, no-one. At least yet any way. Enjoy meeting people and talking scooters and motorcycles.
Where I live, most everything that is 2-wheeled with a motor is a Harley. Maybe just maybe I can turn a few
Heads and opinions when I get my AK550 this week. :)

The warden gave us wifi for last year - and now - by using hand mirrors, us 3 scooter enthusiasts have finally been able to "meet".
It's been a moral boost to the whole cell block!

Hey Larry, I forgot you were on this forum.  I didn't forget that I met you.  I'll go back and change my first post to reflect that.

None as yet.  Although as most of you are in the Sates and I'm in Blighty, that's hardly surprising!

Have a forum member not too far from me and we have threatened to take a run out somewhere one day, so who knows?

Neil is continuing my education, had to look up Blightly .  A informal and typically affectionate term for England by soldiers of World War 1 and World War II.

Neil is continuing my education, had to look up Blightly .  A informal and typically affectionate term for England by soldiers of World War 1 and World War II.

I could be wrong on this KK, but I think as a term, it may have originated in the RAF?  Only used these days by old farts like me!

PS:  Update.  Nope, I'm wrong as a bit of internet surfing reveals that it pre-dates the RAF, going back to Victorian times: " ‘Blighty’ is another one of those Indian words that made it into English during the days of the Raj. It comes from the Hindustani vilayati, which sounds like ‘blighty’ in many regional dialects."

The original 1886 edition of Hobson-Jobson doesn’t mention the word denoting Britain, but ‘Blighty’ passed into British army slang not long afterwards. It certainly appears in soldiers’ letters during the Boer War.  The word really caught on in the First World War. Many of the ‘Old Contemptibles’, the professional soldiers who bore the brunt of the early fighting, had served in India. It’s surely also no coincidence that ‘blighter’ was then a very popular expression meaning an irritating or distasteful person.

It’s exactly the sort of harmless vulgarity that Tommy liked. ‘Blighty’ became hugely popular, used in advertisements, music hall songs, and even as the title of a humorous magazine for servicemen. Soldiers in the trenches hoped that if they got hit, they would “catch a Blighty one” – a non-fatal wound that would get them sent home.

‘Blighty’ quickly passed out of vogue. When used during the Second World War, it was generally with mild irony.

@Neil @Kansas kymco, nothing bad meant.
I don't know who said that originally, but seems to be true sometimes.
"Brits and Americans are the same nation, but divided by a common language".
Like Austrians and Germans are.😉

Thanks Ruffus, it was the great GBS:  George Bernard Shaw said: "England and America are two countries separated by a common language"

We have said the same thing, in fact Neil and I have had a discussion about car parts having different names in each country.  The world has become a smaller place with the internet.  I remember in the early days of the Internet riding in a car with some long time friends  on hwy 400.  We passed  the small town of Beaumont *Kansas.  A question by me led to Marcie looking up the info as we drove down the hwy.  As a child I would have been amazed to be able to make a phone call from a car.

*Beaumont Kansas is a very small town known for historic railroad water tower. It has a hotel/restaurant that pilots land at the airstrip and taxi into town and park in front of the motel restaurant  for lunch.

Happy and safe scootering, Ruffus
