Well, this was stupid
« on: April 21, 2021, 06:15:52 AM »
I have to start a new thread to post on a prior topic, because I can't respond to anything. I keep getting an "error has occurred" statement. Anyway, the fuel pump on my 500 was giving it up. Apparently. So I got another one (5 weeks) and installed it yesterday.  While fiddling with it, I noticed the fuel gauge wasn't registering anything. I'm kind of paranoid about keeping it well above 1/4 of a tank, and it was showing over that all along. Now I think the da*#n gauge stuck and I actually ran out of gas! I certainly hope it's that simple, but it's sitting there with the gauge bottomed out. When it warms back up around 70, it will take a short hop to find out. In retrospect, it acted exactly as it would when running out of gas. Jeez....

Yup. It’s still AWOL from Tapatalk and now I see it keeps forgetting my “forever” login on my iPad. What a pita!

Well, I got it out today, in spite of the wind. I put 40 miles on it without a hitch, and then here we go again. It startied bogging with throttle, to the point where it ran at idle and just above, to about 25-30 mph. Any more throttle it was nope. It acts like not enough fuel. I have just replaced the fuel pump, opened the gas cap to see if the vent was clogged, no good. Then it slowed to where it wouldn't pull itself at all so I ended up in a parking lot. I took the fuel line loose and checked for pressure, and ok. It would not fire a lick. So I called for a ride and after it sat for maybe 15 minutes it fired right back up. We put it in the back of the truck, like a Harley, and it's going to a dealer because I can't troubleshoot the fuel injection or electrics any further than I have. Any chance this thing has an inline filter I'm unaware of? Don't see one, don't see one for sale among Kymco parts suppliers except for carb models. It doesn't miss or stutter, just bogs down like you're running out of gas. 2010 Exciting. I hope they have a diagnostic system for these like the OBD stuff for cars.

Sorry - no OBD2 for motorcycles!  You have to tow it to the dealer.  For now, I'm sticking with non-fuel-injected (non-OBD2) machines (mostly pre-2009).  Just another piece of useful advice: new European-spec (Euro-5 or 6) are almost totally impossible to diagnose without dealer diagnostics, so be warned!!  The green (Euro) plan is NO OWNER DIAGNOSTICS PERMITTED FOR ANY CARS OR BIKES, EVER!)

... and you should just see the paperwork dealers here now have to complete just to ensure ANY work done can be tracked back to the Tech that did it in case anything goes wrong!  I’ve seen the future guys and it ain’t pretty. Just good to know us old farts got our riding in while it was still fun.

I am most comfortable on my Kymco. But my 1984 Moto Guzzi is fine as is my 1981 GS850 Suzuki. I would ride either one across the US & back without worry. The fact that I can do very little with my Kymco means I won't stray more than a couple hundred miles from home until I have a good result for awhile.

Got the phone call from the dealer today, Fun & Sun in Iowa City. My brand new fuel pump gets warm enough to start dropping pressure after about 35 minutes of run time, and levels off about 2-3 lbs below the pressure necessary to run. For many years now I have been complaining that new fuel pumps are a complete crap shoot. At least the mystery seems to be gone and maybe half the money I was expecting. I love my 500, so I was a bit worried.

The fuel filter is on the bottom of the fuel pump.  That's all there is. There are NO OWNER DIAGNOSTICS permitted for EFI motorcycles under European law.  Only dealer diagnostics.

So it's close to 6 weeks now and no sign of a simple fuel pump from Kymco. No matter how much I like my scoot, explain to me why I would ever consider another Kymco? Really? 6 weeks and Kymco can't find a simple repair item. Sun & Fun has zero feedback on when they might receive one. Total BS.

Checking the reviews & history of Kymco 500's might have revealed them to perhaps be the most problematic of the Kymco scooter models.
There are also many satisfied owners of the 500. But the % of complaints seems higher with this model.
Agreed - I wouldn't own a scooter which isn't nearly bullet proof reliable....or lived in an area where it can't easily be returned to that state. (in Taiwan you could probably have your part and a tech to sort your problem by lunch-time)

@wymple, isn't there any other fuelpump which would fit. Take it out and compare online, there must be something fitting.
Happy and safe scootering, Ruffus
