Master Cylinder window replacement?
« on: May 14, 2021, 12:10:18 PM »
Does anyone know where I can get a replacement brake fluid level window for a stock master cylinder? and steps to replace it.

We just picked up a 2018 Kymco super 8 50x. First project was to replace front pads & disc as it had been running metal on metal for some time. While retracting the caliper piston, I inadvertently blew out the brake fluid level window in my master cylinder because I failed to loosen the cover to let it vent.

On a quick search of prior threads I saw:
https://www.kymcoforum.com/index.php?topic=29859.msg211895#msg211895
but no conclusive answer.
Also an older one (from 2009) and use of a dime to replace the window.

thx in advance for your help/leads/advise

Here is an idea that has not been tried by me: Amazon sells small sheets of clear polycarbonate in just about any thickness....

This should work if a dime can be substituted for the window then a disc of this stuff should work. We used polycarbonate in several aircraft applications and it seemed impervious to any fluid the planes used.

Did you look on ebay for a used mater cyclinder?  Might be more cost effective then trying to repair your's.  I would get a part number and check, they probably used the same master  cylinder on several models for several years.

Seems like a homemade window (or slug) would be the only option to salvage the master cylinder. I'll play around with that idea but thanks to another thread I found suppliers and see we can replace the whole master cylinder & handle assembly for ~$45 so, that's reasonable.

thx again for your input. Happy to find the forum and resources here. :)

You don't have to worry about corrosion brake fluid leaking with a new  master cylinder.

Yep....don't mess with complete brake failure of that most important front tire during an emergency situation!!
Replace your broken part.

I'm trying to do this right and order the front brake subassembly kit (4550B-LEJ2-E10) which includes all parts from caliper up to and including master cylinder and handgrip.

Unfortunately, nobody seems to have this in stock and the Kymco warehouse is operated (due to covid) by one guy.   :(

Modern 'lean supply chain' works until it breaks and doesn't anymore. If anyone has a lead for finding these parts I am in your debt.

Actually if you look on ebay they have generic Master cylinders that look like the original brand new for $25. Just ordered one for the Lambretta  Uno  (Herchee) because the old one was leaking a little.  Who knows might be the same company that builds them for  Kymco and other manufacturers.

I did see similar assemblies on ebay, like this one https://www.ebay.com/itm/113917120574?hash=item1a85fd503e:g:cHAAAOSwuo5dbjq0 (from Israel argh!!). It looks quite similar and may fit but it is a different model #.

The plot thickens here, we are looking at the full kit now because the pins holding the caliper pads in are frozen and we can't get them to release. Only thing I haven't tried is heating them up, which I don't think would be a viable option with the rubber seals on the caliper.

thanks for the ideas though.
