Rear shock - Kymco AK550
« on: May 21, 2021, 12:52:48 AM »
I am wanting a smoother ride especially with a passenger aboard.  Do anyone know of a good aftermarket shock
That will give me a smoother ride.

Thanks

First look at the total weight of you and your passenger and then the load capacity of the bike---exceed or at near limit, nothing will help.  And then remember you have scooter, not BMW of the 1950's.

I do not know what max weight rating for the AK 550 but my  Xicting 500 is 330#.
In parts 200S and Grand Vista and my motorcycles 2 CS BMW'S and one GS BMW.

Sold-32 Kymco scooters of various sizes this summer.

I was thinking the rear shock on the AK is adjustable. Did you try adjusting it?
On my last 3 bikes I always had to adjust the rear shocks to make for a better ride.

currently, my wife and I exceed the weight capacity of the scooter.  I will check the shock that is on the scooter to see if it is adjustable.  I was just curious if anyone with an AK550 had went with an aftermarket shock, but apparently not. I appreciate the replies and will report how an aftermarket shock performs versus the stock one.😃

Adjusting the rear shock does not increase the carrying capacity of a scooter - nor does changing shocks - but it should help keep you from 'bottoming' the shocks too often. The load capacity is taking into consideration the frame (welds, bearings & reinforcing), tires, brakes, steering, etc., etc.

I think the Burgman 400 had about the greatest carrying capacity of any scooter I've read about. It was just over 400lbs. The 650 was similar.

Many will tell you that the manufacturer sets very safe/modest load capacity figures in order to 'cover their bottoms'....and that people regularly exceed those figures (think of the last two-up Harley you saw go by)

A scooter for each might be a possibility?
