Headlight bulb
« on: October 21, 2010, 05:28:03 PM »
My low beam has failed, high beam still works fine. Can I get a replacement bulb at the local auto parts store or is it something special? Also is it easy to replace?

Yes you can, you have one screw in the front and six (or so) in the back to remove the whole headlight assembly.
3 min of work.

+1 on what Axy said..
You need a 'H4' type bulb.

The rear's power consumption is minimal.. so I wouldn't bother.
Are you suggesting that the front H4 stock/OEM bulb was a 35W unit?

You might wanna check BOTH power ratings for the bulbs you had/have now, since the high beam on some
non-road legal H4 bulbs is 100W (low beam is the standard 55W) instead of 60W.

I don't see any problems running both low and high beam at the same time on mine.

its really 35w...

noticed loosing power when holding breakes...rear is dipol 5w/21w and its cousing amp down efect..60+21+5+signal light 5+5....too many wats...low amp-gone fuse..

ive change rear led dipol and plate to led...now things are ok...

also my idle is set to low (i like that, did it myself) feels like 650rpms...big bike tuning...known for bad oil press-higher fric-less km

80/100w tune up works with glass housing and good conn, temps to overheat assembly....kymco is not that good...

its really 35w...

That's interesting..
Can anyone else here confirm this?

This means that pretty much every single 55W bulb would be an upgrade.

My bulb was not an H4. I got an OEM replacement at my local dealer for $5.00 each.

At around 14.000km on the clock, my high-beam died today, and just a few hours later
low beam too. Mostly high was used.. oh well.

Here's what was in my 2006 EU spec Agility 125, a HS1 Philips 35/35W bulb:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Click on the image for full size and all the numbers and stuff if you're interested.

I replaced it with a regular car-spec H4 55/60W bulb, some generic chinese brand,
$2,5 or so. It SHOULD make a difference due to higher power.. we'll see.

I used to use the high-beam just to get noticed, hopefully I'll be able to get away
with the low now.

I also own agility city, R16 and can confirm OE  headlight HS1 35/35W. I assume it is the same on most scoot's. I upgraded to a Philips Motovision which does give more light, and oncoming traffic see an orange glow.
You can fit an H4 with some modification to one of the locating tabs, however some people warn that the extra heat could melt the lens cover, even the 35W comes with a warning of a heat of 200C!

We'll see, if I notice anything going 'bad' in there I'll modify the headlight for more air flow.
BTW, no modifications were needed on mine to fit the H4.. plug & play.

Just got back from a test ride.

Seems like I've got a light modulator with the cheapo bulb..  ;D
Seriously.. for the first few minutes, the light was constantly changing from like
100% output to 80% and back, in no regular fashion. Is this a cheap bulb feature
or something else?

It shouldn't be the increased power (35 to 55W) since there was no modulating
effect when I used to run both low and high beam at the same time which was
35+35W=70W.

To make things even stranger, the modulating effect was gone after first few minutes.

I haven't checked how warm the headlight cover got before the bulb swap, but it sure
gets rather warm now, but nothing smells funny so...

And yeah, there's a lot more light out there now, but the pattern is even more screwed
up now, again not sure if it's up to the $2 bulb or different type of bulb.

Screwed up light pattern + all that wild uncontrolled wind blowing around - must be almost unbearable now.  ;D 8) :P
