Help Needed!! Dead Bike!
« on: October 22, 2010, 06:08:00 PM »
Hi All,

My left indicator was not working properly as it had a loose wire. I thought nothing of it and planned to get round to fixing it at some point. Then every now and then when I put the indicator on I got a loud buzzing noise. Put it down to the loose wire.

Out the other day and there was a strange noise coming from the fan. I opened it up to make sure there was nothing in there like dirt etc. Whilst I was there I cleaned the spark with sandpaper. Took the bike out and it was sluggish and the noise came again from the fan. Then it just died!

Got it started again and it died again after 1 minute. Would not turnover at all (like when the battery is flat).
I wheeled it off the road and it started again but I had to keep revving at the junctions to keep the engine going.
So I opened the front and fixed the wire hoping it was an electrical problem. Rode it down the road and it was fine. The the load buzzing noise came again without me pressing the indicator and the noise form the fan came back and the bike completely died. Started again on the kick and then it made the load buzz and died again. Now it just clicks when I press the start and It wont kick start as the kick wont go down.

My next step is to change the spark and fully check all electrical connections? Sound right??

sorry to tell you this but it sounds like maybe your stator is gone. Sometimes they might freeze up
and start makeing noise if they are realy gone.thenyour battery well go low.which is why you indicator
is acting up.

..i agree with blue..

..AND YOU NEED TO FIX THAT SHORTED WIRING!!!

..My left indicator was not working properly as it had a loose wire. I thought nothing of it and planned to get round to fixing it at some point. Then every now and then when I put the indicator on I got a loud buzzing noise. Put it down to the loose wire.

...had you nipped that in th' bud when it happened, you might not be buying a new stator...

 :-\

...now, for sure...you need to thoroughly inspect all the wiring in that circuit...

..you got a copy of the a50 service manual???

thanks word. try following the wires from behind your steering column all the way down sometimes the movement of the steering going back and forth well wear down the wireing.

BTW Would it not be the regulator/rectifier that has gone and not the stator? I'm hoping as it is cheaper but is there an easy way to check?

..possibly, but you say the "noise" was from the fan area....

Yeah it was like this:

1. the (now and again)buzzing was coming from the rectifier.
2. Started to notice a ticking like noise from the fan
3. With a load buzz from the rectifier the bike died.
4. Got it started and it rode again fine.
5. Ticking noise came back from the fan
6. With a load buzz from the rectifier the bike died again and now the kick wont go down.

I wish I had checked that wire earlier  >:( I'm gonna take it to the shop. £20 to get it there £40 an hour labour.

Wow. Sorry to hear that. I thought you were working on a wiring or stator type issue. Don't know if your under warranty or not. Might seek a second opinion. Sounds expensive.

...damn, rl.....

..that frikin sucks...

..i reckon i don't see how the engine could be siezed...

..maybe the stator is melted and got it locked-up that way...

..maybe, but what you were describing as symptoms SHOULD NOT result in a siezed engine.......
