So there's 13 mpg more on the highway riding. Hmm. What's the mpg supposed to be for your scoot?

Hey, Arkie.  Those numbers sound darn good actually.  Pretty normal for highway to be more than city too.  Still lovin my Xciting too.  ;)

I wouldn't know, but it does sound like great gas mileage on the Xciting 500!

You may not be running lean.  This has been a subject here before.  It's quite possible you've got a more efficient set up than stock now, so you use less throttle to get the same performance.  And if you choose to twist the throttle more, you'd see the mpg come down.

Edit: in other words, you'd use less throttle in your average riding.

I seem to remember you checked your plug for lean condition and it was ok, right?

Arkie, love my Xciting as well.  I get 45 - 48 city and depending on speed 45 - 55 on the road.  Back roads are great for gas mileage but making time on the expressway really cuts into MPG.

BTW - On seeing a scoot at the shrinks office, it belongs to the shrink.  She rides with our scooter group.  ;D

I average 41.9 in combined driving on my 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid.  It carries 5 adults in air-conditioned comfort and it's 2500 cc engine produces 156 hp.  Just a reality check for those who buy them (Maxi-scooters) for their fuel economy  :o.  To their credit, they ARE a lot more fun (in fair weather).  That would leave me to believe that scooter engineering is rather primitive compared to the automotive industry, especially when you consider that they are considerably more expensive on a pound for pound basis.  Still, I love my Xciting 500.  Gives me an opportunity to again share rides with my motorcycle nut son since my hip-replacement surgery.  Fun DOES come at a price  :P.  FWIW, the average single engine airplane is still flying around with 50 yr. old engine technology.  Economy of scale at work, I guess.

I think the motorcycle/scooter industry just looks at their market and decides not to put more expensive fuel saving technology in their products.  It'd make the price of a scoot/cycle too high.  Not to mention, there may not be enough room.  :D

Even so, if one wants nothing more than GREAT fuel mileage, one can buy a smaller scooter and get it.

There is no small car that gets mileage equal to a small scooter.  No mid-size car mileage equals a mid-size scooter, etc.

But I agree, I really like riding in my '04 Honda Civic in comfort in all weather -- getting near 40 mpg!
