Difficulty in finding parts?
« on: August 31, 2021, 10:49:36 PM »
I've not needed Kymco parts for a while but I'm hearing chatter about problems finding parts or distributors.  My 2 local Kymco dealers dropped the Kymco line so I have no local dealer to support.  I had been considering purchasing a used Kymco this coming winter but parts availability now concerns me.  Are the online sources of OEM Kymco parts able to get parts and give good service? Should I be concerned about purchasing another Kymco scooter for this reason?

The way things seem to be changing - especially this past 24 mos. - I'd give https://www.solanocycle.com and https://www.leesonsarcticcat.com a phone call to their parts department.

Ask them about parts availability.

If you learn anything of substance - please pass it on here!

I would say parts availability is at about 60%. Meaning if a dealer orders 100 part numbers he would likely receive 60. It's hit or miss. As a dealer, before I place an order, I always call Kymco and confirm availability so i can comfortably tell the customer when the parts will arrive. A couple years ago, the parts fill ratio was between 94 and 97%.

I recently ordered parts for a 2007 Kymco People 200S about 10 items . All but 2 items came in, a rear fender and some rubber windshield grommets.  I didn't think that was bad for a 14 year old scooter.   I did wait several months for a 2008 Kymco People 250S speedometer cable.

What I would like to find is a source for Kymco touch up paint.
In parts 200S and Grand Vista and my motorcycles 2 CS BMW'S and one GS BMW.

Sold-32 Kymco scooters of various sizes this summer.

Yes I ordered the parts from my local dealer. Dan's cycle. It took longer to get some parts for my Yamaha Majesty then it did from Kymco.  He doesn't carry any Kymco inventory parts wise . In fact the only Kymco model he sells are the Agility's.  The midwest is not a large scooter market.

A lot of things I can't find here I'm able to order from Greese.  Seat covers, windscreens ect.

I'm in a unique situation with multiple bikes and scooters if ones down for a extended period of time.

I try to patronize my local dealer. I've know him for 30 years and bought jet ski, utv, multiple motorcycles . I know every person in there by name.  Stuff I don't want to do I drop off in the slow season to keep the shop busy. Changing tires immediately comes to mind.  His prices are reasonable.

This is really the ONLY question I have about potentially owning a Kymco AK 550. Can I get parts.
@Iahawk, You mentioned some time ago that your dealer is Sun & Fun Motorsports of Iowa City. Do you have any issues getting parts from there?

Well, there's Kymco parts.....and then there's parts for the new, rare, 550! Might be a whole different story - recalling some difficulties with the also very rare 700 a few yrs ago.

I have not had any trouble ordering Kymco parts through them. A week to 10 days, max. I’ve ordered rollers, belts, gaskets, clutch, battery strap…and probably other stuff. I can even call them and tell them what I want, they will order it and phone me when the part is in. Good guys, there, and great service.

Good to hear. Just adding to all my research about the potential of owning a Kymco AK.

I think that due to them being primarily a BMW dealer they just might be attempting to impress enough to make a new BMW customer. But then again maybe they really are a good dealership. Although I've known some BMW dealers who did not deal in any other brand and who held on to the attitude that if you wanted to ride a real bike you'd own a BMW. But this dealer carries several brands and most of that kind of dealer that I've experience with around here do try to be more helpful regardless what you ride. They acknowledge that there are more than one kind of bike/scooter worth supporting.

BTW- this is the same dealership I had contacted a month ago who has at least one staff member who did not know they still supported any Kymco product. Then a different staff member called me to apologize for that first persons lack of knowledge about what brands they carry.

they actually just recently (1-2 years ago?) combined their separate, stand alone BMW store with their existing full line (Kawi, Honda, Suzuki, Honda, Triumph, RE, Kymco, CF moto.....etc..) store.

One of the guys there said that BMW was not happy to lose their stand alone store but it made perfect business sense to combine resources. He also said their BMW sales had grown significantly since the move...makes sense as he said many people wouldn't bother to visit a BMW store for whatever reason..but when they came to the full line store and saw the selection of BMWs they didn't realize all the different price points or models available.

These guys have given me great service both before and after bringing in their BMW line. It's just how they operate.

The  irony of that is Kymco  builds engines along with other parts for BMW.
